School Board OKs Personnel Action HY l)Oll<; RUTTKR The Brunswick County Hoard of Hducation approved a number of routine personnel actions during its regular meeting Monday night in Southport. The board hired Judith Babcock of Sunset Beach to work as a school psychologist out of the central of fice and Paul Brown of Pcnn Yan, N.Y., as an interim seventh-grade language arts teacher at South Brunswick Middle School. Board members also approved the hiring of Joseph Chic of Shal lottc in the maintenance department and Joyce Johnson of Shallottc and Wilma Robinson of Supply as cafe teria workers at West Brunswick High School. Other actions approved included retirement of Helen Laugisch of Supply, an F.nglish teacher at South Brunswick High School: Gerald Pyles of Wilmington, a biology teacher at West Brunswick High School; and Phil Burton of Castle Hayne, computer coordinator at the central office. The school board approved leave of absences for two teachers, Yulan da Bollinger of Shallottc and Mick cy Hancock of Soulhport. Approved as substitute teachers were Michelle f ields, Emma flew ett. Susan Phillips. Robert Proctor. Ellen Rudd, Pamela Parker, Kristin Chapman, James Bryant, Patsy Hcwctt and Wanda f.eggctt. Also Monday, board chairman iXmna Baxter made several appoint ments. Board members Polly Russ and Yvonne Bright were named to a policy manual committee. Superin tendent PR ffankins will appoint more members to that committee. Mrs. Baxter also appointed Doug Baxley and Robert Slockctt to the grievance committee. Mrs. Russ and Mrs. Bright will serve as alter nates. Hankins appointed Ronnie Jenk ins, a social studies teacher at South Brunswick High School, to repre sent the teachers on the grievance committee. Yvonne Adams, a scc ond-grade teacher at South Elemen tary School, will be the alternate. Other Itusiness In other business Monday, the school board: ? Received a S1,(KK) check from Jcdco R<x?fing Systems of Raleigh, which recently put new metal roofs on the county's throe high schools. The company received the money for winning the 1990 Metal Con struction News re-roof of the year award for its work at the schools. The contractor also presented the board with aerial photos of c;ich of the high schools. Superintendent PR. Hankins said the money will be used for a drop-out prevention pro gram. ? Voted to give a staff satisfaction survey to each teacher in the school system to get their input on how the school board and administration can help. The 85-question survey is pro vided by the National Educators As sociation. ? Set up a workshop for Monday, Jan. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in Lcland Mid dle School to discuss a recent audit of expense accounts for administra tors and board members. The workshop will precede the board's next regular meeting. ? Heard from Frances Fowler regar ding the Brunswick Advantage Pro gram, an employee benefit package offered at The Brunswick Hospital in Supply. Hankins was asked to look into the program, which is of fered at no cost to the school system. ? Heard from Bill Turner, assistant superintendent of operations, that the school system is working to cor rect sewer system problems at West Brunswick High School and Bolivia and Waccamaw elementary schools Turner also reported that the federal government has mandated an as bestos inspection at cach sch<x>l. The total cost of the inspections will be around S8.500. ? Presented two plaques to Carol Midgctt, who is a first-grade teacher at Southport Elementary School. The plaques from the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics and N.C. Department of Public Instruc tion were for outstanding elemen tary math teaching. ? Heard a presentation on the plan ned elementary school to be located at Supply. The board will have to choose a name for the K-5 school at its January meeting. ? Tentatively approved a request from the North Brunswick High School senior class for the class to take a "Cirad Nitc" trip to Orlando, Ha., May 10-12, 1991. Hankins was asked to see if there will be proper supervision on the trip and to check on the purpose of "Grad Nitc." The S7,5(X) grant from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction will be used for a two-prong program which the school plans to imple ment in January, according to Assistant Principal Syhil Simmons. One part of the program will he aimed at improving the school abil ity to work with Spanish-speaking students. Mrs. Simmons said Waccamaw is the smallest school in Hrunswick County but has the largest percentage of Spanish speaking students, most of whom come from families who work on farms. 'Ihe grant will bo used to gel a part lime staff member on campus who can speak Spanish with the families Hie school also plans to otfcr Spanish class to school stall through Hrunswick Community College, Mrs. Simmons said. Also through the grant, the school hopes to improve parent invoke ment by purchasing paperback b<x>ks to send home with the students. Mrs. Simmons said instructions on how parents can use the books with their children also will be sent home. Parents will bo invited to school to Icam how they can use the Nx>ks and help their children. The assistant principal said 65 North Carolina public schools applied for the grants and eight were funded. She said she has applied for sever al grants at Waccamaw, but this was the first time she got one funded.
