Planning First Step in Landscaping

The toughest aspcct of designing
a good landscape involves the plan
ning. A well planned landscape is
beautiful and in most cases less ex
pensive to install and maintain than
an unplanned landscape.
In addition, good planning will
provide maxi
mum benefit
and enjoyment
to all the resi
dents of the
home.
Most people
think plants
constitute the
body of the
landscape and,
in a general WILLIAMS
way, this is true. However, the struc
ture or backbone of a good landscape
rests in the hardscapc ? patios,
walks, lighting, gazebos and the like.
Decide how hardscapc features will
be incorporated into your landscape
before plant material is considered.
The materials and architectural style
used to construct hardscapc features
should reflect and compliment those
of your home. Walks and automobile
drives are one of the important hard
scape features to consider in land
scape planning. When planning a
walk or drive try to avoid an angular
or blocky appearance. The rounded
THE PLANT DOCTOR
flowing curvcs of a walk arc a more
acsthctically pleasing transition from
the outside environment to the home
entrance. Many kinds of materials
and treatments arc available for
walks and drives; investigate the al
ternatives.
Most every homeowner eventual
ly wants to add a patio or deck.
Most authorities feel that a mini
mum of 75 square feet of patio or
deck be allowed per family mem
ber. I have found 125 square feet
per family member is even better.
Most patios are used for family fel
lowship or entertainment, but a
small patio is rarely used for either.
One of the enticements of a vaca
tion cottage is the spacious patio or
deck. Design your outside living
area with this in mind.
Choosing the right plants for your
landscape can be the most difficult
part of the planning process. How
ever, for most of us, it is the most
enjoyable part of landscape design.
Some of the factors that should be
considered when selecting planLs
arc these:
Form and size: Pyramidal and
formally pruned evergreens create
strong focal points and should be
used with extreme care. Most ranch
style houses require small (dwarf)
evergreen plants that are less for
inal. Know the mature height and
the rate of growth of the plants you
are using.
Texture: A coarse textured plant,
such as magnolia, creates a stronger
focal point in the landscape than a
fine textured plant such as box
wood. use transitions in plant fo
liage texture ? coarse to medium to
fine ? to make visual passages with
in a bed and between beds in the
landscape. Use fine textured plant
materials along walks and near en
trances.
Color: Color is the most difficult
of the design elements to work with.
In general use cool colors such as
blues, whites and pastels in flower
beds that will be viewed from close
range.
Flower beds adjoining a deck or
patio will "feel" cooler in the sum
mer when flower colors arc pastels,
blues and whites.
Use bright reds, yellows and or
anges to attract attention or for a
secondary focal point. Massing
these colors produces a visually
"hot" area in the landscape that is
sure to become a focal point.
Planning your landscape should
be done with the same care and de
tail used to plan your home. Only
nature can produce beautiful land
scapes without planning.

Tremendous Turnips
Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Bernard Jr. of Cedar drove grew these big turnips in their garden. The largest one
was 28 inches in diameter. Bernard said he used 3-9-9 tobacco fertilizer and tilled sawdust into the soil.
The sawdust came from a nearby hog farm.

Seminar Looks At
Problem Families
An eight-week seminar on the
problems caused by dysfunctional
families will be held in the teaching
auditorium at Brunswick Communi
ty College starting Tuesday, Feb.
12, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The course will explore problems
that occur in the lives of adults who
were raised in families in which a
member was emotionally unavail
able as a result of physical absence
or physical, emotional or mental ill
ness.
Children raised in these families
generally develop into adults who
have difficulty in relationships.
These and other problems will be
discussed in the seminar, Core
Issues for Adult Children from Dys
functional Families.
