Wilson Named Shallotte Point Fireman Of Year Il camc as no surprise to fellow firefighters when Assistant Chief Johnny Wilson was named the first "fireman of the year" for the Shal lottc Point Volunteer Fire Depart ment by Chief Mike Potts. "There's not a fireman here who doesn't think he doesn't deserve it 100 times over," said Vernon Ward, the department's sccreiary-treasurcr. Wilson, who is partially disabled, spends a minimum of 50 hours a month on fire department business, estimated Potts. Along with fighting fires, said Potts, Wilson is "chairman of the turkey shoot, which runs every Friday and Saturday night October through December, he maintains all of our equipment and the building and he's my all-around go-fer." "He puts in a lot of time, effort and training," concluded Potts. Wilson, who joined the depart ment several months after moving to the Point community in Novem ber 1985, is certified as a Firefighter I. He completed more than 140 hours of training in the process of earning that designation. While he willingly takes on ad ministrative and maintenance du ties, "I joined to be fireman," said Wilson. However, his five years of ser vice will soon be interrupted for an indefinite period of lime. Wilson and Potts were both in jured while helping fight an Aug. 11 boat fire. Potts has already under gone surgery for a ruptured disk. Wilson, who is 42, hurt both shoulders and his neck. Next Tues day, he is scheduled to undergo surgery on one shoulder. Doctors have told him to expect recovery to take a minimum of three months, followed by additional surgery to address his other injuries. Thai's a price he never cxpcctcd to pay as a volunteer fireman. But, he said, "It came with the job." W they read. When you come right down to it, the average newspaper reader bears a striking resemblence to someone you know very well: your customer. That's because people who read the newspaper are more likely to buy products like yours. And since almost 70% of newspaper readers earn over $20,000, they have the money to be able to afford them. But there may be an even more basic reason why newspapers are so successful at reaching your customers: People read newspapers. Over 44% of newspaper readers have advanced their education beyond high school. And when they sit down with a newspaper, it's be cause they take time to read, for enjoyment and for information. It all comes down to this: Better educated read ers with higher incomes are more likely to be better customers for your products. That's exactly why we can safely say, even the av erage newspaper reader is certainly your above aver age consumer. THE BRUNSWICK#BEACON Source: NC Press Services, Inc.
