Salute Role Models This Months
BY BARBARA T. HEYVETT
I'd like to salute my mother, Cora
Lee Turner, and the Choirs Confed
eration in the
first of a series
of salutes to in
dividuals and
organizations
during Black
History Month,
a time for re
calling the ac
complishments
of America's
forgotten and
oppressed brothers and sisters who
made their contribution unwillingly
in slavery, whose descendants in
stead of picking cotton with bleed
ing or frostbit hands now help to
pick presidents.
Hats OfT To Mom
Cora Lee Turner and her hus
band, the late Leroy Turner, a native
of Statesville, are the parents of 1 1
children. I am the only one who re
mains in North Carolina.
Of these children, two are correc
tional counselors, in Maryland and
New Jersey; two are schooltcachers
in North Carolina and Maryland;
three are postal clerks and carriers
in Virginia and Connecticut; two arc
nurse assistants; one is a merchant
mariner and another a Class A
welder.
This Feb. 12 she celebrates her
81st birthday, with her daughters tra
veling from distances to be with her.
Singers Deserve Credit
The Choirs Confederation was
hosted Feb. 10 by the church where
it originated nearly a half century
ago, Piney Grove Free Will Baptist
Church of Bolivia.
One of the earliest cultural re
sources in Brunswick County, it was
organized solely for the purpose of
uniting in songs of praise. Deserving
HEWETT
recognition for their participation arc
these churches: St. John, Zion Hill,
Piney Grove, Rutland Chapel,
Southport First Baptist, Big Mace
donia, Little Macedonia, Cedar
Grove, St. James, Bethlehem, Ken
dall Chapel and Christian Chapel.
Also, hats off to Richard Ran
dolph, the deacon who helped found
the group and continues in a leader
ship role; layman Hodges Morgans
of Cedar Grove and Jackilyn
Bellamy of Kendall Chapel.
Past leaders who are now deceas
ed included Phlander Roosevelt
Hankins I and Dollic Evans.
The public is always invited to at
tend the choirs' monthly programs.
Hewett To Speak
Cedar Grove is fortunate to have
in its midst a young minister of such
stature as to be asked to speak at the
Ocean View Associational annual
"mass" meeting, Ruben Gregory
Hewett, son of Ruben and Evelyn
Hewett, natives of the area.
Tune In
Listen to WVCB (1410 AM) in
Shallouc on Thursdays at 3 p.m.
and Saturdays at 10:15 a.m. for the

Weekly Scripture
This week's Scripture comes from
Daniel 7 and continues the prophetic
sayings, " I saw ir the night vision
and oehold one like the Son of Man
came with the clouds of heaven and
came to the Ancient of Days, whose
hair of his head was like pure wool,
his garment white as snow, his feet
were as fine polished brass, his
throne was like the fiery flame and
his wheels as burning fire.
A fiery stream issued and came
forth from before him; thousands
and thousands ministered unto him,
and ten thousand limes ten thousand
stood before him: the judgment was
set and the books were opened.
Thank You
My family and I would
like to thank all the
friends, co-workers,
churches and a lot
more who have gone
out of their way to help
us in our deepest time
of need. God bless each
and every one of you.
