FAIRMONT OUSTS WEST IN TOURNEY SEMI-FINALS Trojans Attain First 20-Win Cage Season In 13 Years BY JOHNNY CRAIG West Brunswick rccordcd its first 20-win season in 13 years with last Tuesday's 79-58 romp over visiting West Columbus in the opening round of the Waccamaw 2-A Con ference boys' basketball tourna ment. The Trojans (20-5) were ousted trom the WC toumey on Thursday in an 86-82 loss to Fairmont in the semifinal round at North Bruns wick. Prior to the current campaign, West Brunswick's last 20-win sea son came in 1978-79 when the late Gary Taylor's final Trojan squad finished 24-4. The Trojans were to have opened play in the Eastern 2-A Sectional IV tournament earlier this week (Tues day) hosting the fourth-place team of the Capital Area Conference. At press time West Brunswick coach Billy Mims indicated the Trojans' most likely opponent would be Clayton. The winner of the Tuesday contest will travel to meet the Central Tar Heel Con ference runncrup tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. Fairmont A quicker Fairmont team over came late foul trouble and staved off a furious West Brunswick rally in the final period to down the Trojans for the second straight time this season, 86-82. LaPerry Hill led the Trojans with 28 points and Ricky Daniels was held to 18 points, his second-lowest point total of the season. Jerry Reaves added 15 for West Bruns wick. DeMorris Winningham scored 24 points to lead Fairmont (20-6). Jonathan Grissett added 19 points and James Moore 18 for the Golden Tornadoes. "We just didn't rise to the chal lenge tonight," said Mims following the loss. "We also just went cold shooting the ball at the wrong times also." "We got right back in the game early in the fourth quarter but suf fered a mental lapse. Fairmont is a super-quick team and they arc also such a young team." "I stressed to our players after the game Uiat we have had a great sea son but we don't want to end it on a sour note like tonight. We plan to continue our season a little while longer in the state playoffs." After trailing by only one point. 42-41 at the half. West Brunswick fell behind by nine, 66-57 at the end of the third quarter. The Golden Tornado lead came despite Grissctt and LaMont Taylor each being charged with their fourth foul in the final three minutes of the quarter. However, the Trojans opened the fourth period with a 6-0 spurt in cluding four points from Hill to close the gap to 66-63. After Fairmont increased its lead back to 76-69 with 3:35 to play. West Brunswick staged yet another rally scoring six straight points to get within 76-75 with 1:49 left. A pair of Daniels free throws with 1:01 to play kept the Trojans within one, 78-77, but Fairmont puiiea away with seven unanswered points in the next 27 seconds to ice the victory. The lead changed hands 1 1 times in a see-saw first half. The Trojans largest first-quarter lead, 10-6, came on Hill's jumper with 2:25 to play. Grissett sank a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left to equal Fair mont's largest opening-period lead, 17-14. West Brunswick regained the lead, 21-20 with six straight points including a Hill three-point goal with 6:50 left in the first half. Neither team led by more than three points in the remaining min utes of the first half. Winningham's jumper with five seconds left gave the Golden Tornadoes their 42-41 halftime edge. He earned an athletic grant Idress Students in-aid to Wake Forest where he played from 1968 to 1971, accord ing to a UCB news release. McGregor became a sixth-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Roy als in 1971. After playing in the Na tional Basketball Association for one year, he completed his profes sional career in Europe. McGregor has served as academ ic advisor at Wake Forest Univer sity and has worked with the Great er Winston- Salem Chamber of Commerce. He served as an analyst for ESPN during the 1988 NCAA Basketball Tournament and was an analyst for the Winston-Salem State radio network. West Columbus West Brunswick jumped on the seventh-seeded West Columbus Vikings early and cruised to an easy 79-58 win in Tuesday's opening round of the Waccamaw Conference tournament. Daniels scored 16 of his team leading 28 points in the first half as the Trojans led by as many as 19 points on a half-dozen occasions. Aldwin Lance scored 12 points and Reaves 11 to aid the Trojan cause. Rashad Roberts led West Co lumbus (7-16) with 16 points and Keno Jones added 15. West Brunswick opened a 10-0 lead in the first quarter enroute to a 12-5 advantage at the end of the pe riod. The Trojans then outscored West Coiumbus 14-2 to start the second quarter and led 41-23 at halftime. Daniels highlighted the third quarter with a two-handed reverse slam dunk with 4:50 to play in the period that ignited the Trojan crowd and gave West Brunswick a 48-27 lead. West Columbus managed to cut the Trojan lead to 54-39 at the end of the third quarter but West Brunswick went on a 12-2 spree midway in the final period for its biggest lead of the game, 72-47.
