Calvary Tops Shallotte Presbyterian For Church League Tourney Titie Chris Hoover scored 18 points to lead Calvary Baptist past Shallotte Presbyterian 59-48 for the tourna ment championship of the Bruns wick County Men's Church Basket ball League held Monday at Wac camaw School. Greg Bellamy led Shallotte Presbyterian with 16 points. Zion Baptist won the consolation game with a 41-40 edging of Shal lotte First Baptist. Hugh Ray led Zion with 27 points while Gordon Winfrey scored 19 for First Baptist. Calvary, winners of the regular season championship with a 9-1 record, advanced to the finals with a 74-31 rout of Shallotte First Baptist in a semifinal round game. Shallotte Presbyterian edged Zion Baptist 40-39 in the other semifinal contest. In the tournament's opening round. First Baptist defeated Camp Methodist 39-35 and Zion nipped Longwood Baptist 62-59. RECREATION BRIEFS All-County Teams Announced Brunswick County middle school coachcs have announced the all cuuniy boys and girls basketball teams for the 1990-91 season. Members of the boys' team are Timothy Daniels and Chris Mintz of Shallottc, Wade Ashley of Wacca maw, Charles Blue of South Bruns wick and Mario Bullard of Leland. The girls' all-county team includes Penny Hill and Felicia Morgan of Shallotte, Rebecca Hughes and Cynthia Borden of Waccamaw, Tennisa Davis of South Brunswick and Michelle Bennett of Leland. Movement Class Set The Long Beach Parks and Recre ation Department is offering a voice and movement class starting today (Thursday) at the recreation center. Classes will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost is S8 per person. The class is for theater and non theater individuals who want to develop a stronger natural voice, enjoy a tension-free body, learn a proper warm-up and stretching pro gram, strengthen stage presence and preparation and improve posture and appearance. Umpires Sought The Waccamaw Dixie Youth Baseball League needs umpires for the upcoming season. All umpires must be certified, and a certification class will be held Saturday, March 16. Easter Events Set Spring is coming and so is the Easter Bunny. The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for the Easter holiday with an after-school arts program and com munity egg hunt. Participants in the spring holiday craft program will make bunnies and ducks and dye eggs. The pro gram is open to children ages 6 to 13, and all materials will be provid ed. The program will be offered Fri day, March 22, at Leland Library; Monday, March 25, at West Bruns wick Branch Library, Shallottc; and Wednesday, March 27, at Southport Library. Classes begin at 4 p.m. and last about an hour. The community egg hunt is scheduled Saturday, March 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the government center in Buiivia. Wayne Branch scored 17 points and Jody Riley 15 to lead the Bulls. The Bulls advanced to the tour ney finals with a 5 1 -49 win over the Lakers in a preliminary round game also on Saturday. Waters Closed To Fishermen State fisheries officials closed Brunswick Cuuuiy coastal waters to shellfishing Monday and will stop shrimp harvesting within three miles of the beach starling today (Thursday). The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries temporarily closed oyster and clam beds between Southport and the South Carolina line Monday morning due to heavy rainfall over the weekend. Rainfall can carry bacterial pollu tion into coastal waters and make shellfish unsafe to cat The local closure was part of an action that affected waters as far north as Hyde County, according to a state procla mation. Starting today, ocean waters within three miles of the Brunswick County coast will close to shrimp ing to protect white shrimp spawn ing populations. Atlantic Ocean waters between a line running from Cape Fear to Buoy 6FP and the South Carolina state line will close to shrimp har vesting, according to a Marine Fisheries proclamation. The temporary closure is com mon in the late winter and early spring to protect spawning shrimp populations.
