Trojan Hitting Camp
Begins Tuesday
BY JOHNNY CRAIG
Easter holidays might mean time off for most high schools but West
Brunswick baseball coach Mike Aldcrson plans to stay busy over the break.
Following this week's fust annual Beach Diamond Classic baseball
tournament (championship and consolation rounds scheduled for Friday),
Alderson will offer a two-day hitting camp beginning Tuesday, Apr. 2, for
ages 8-15.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. each day. Registration is lim
ited to the first 50 entrants. Cost is S25 per person.
Included in the camp will be instruction involving hitting drills, video
taping and lots of live batting practice.
"Our emphasis is placed on teaching proper hitting mechanics in order
to develop a sound stroke which will lead to success," said Alderson.
The camp is ideal for players participating in the many youth leagues
in the area to get a head start on the upcoming spring diamond season.
Mosters Of The Close Game
The Whiteville Wolfpack have been the masters of winning the close
game early this baseball season.
The Wolfpack broke from a 2-1 lead to score four runs in the seventh
to defeat West Brunswick last Friday, 6-1.
Earlier last week, Whiteville scored twice in the seventh to edge
Acme-Delco 2-0. Along with the Wolfpack's 10-6 win over Acme-Delco,
Whiteville currently is 1-0 in the WC, 4-0 overall and should join North
Brunswick as the teams to beat as the league diamond season begins.
Pitching Plentiful For West Baseball
The West Brunswick baseball team is not suffering from a pitching
shortage this spring according to second-year head coach Mike Alderson.
The Trojans, now 0-1 in the Waccamaw 2- A Conference and 1-3-1
overall, have used no less than five pitchers in the first five games in veter
ans George Daniels and Adam Johnson, the coach's son Brian Alderson,
Aldwin Lance and Bryan Fleming.
Daniels was scheduled to start yesterday (Wednesday) in the Trojans'
opening game of the first Beach Diamond Classic baseball tournament
against Chapman, S.C.
Alderson indicated he plans to start son Brian in today's (Thursday)
Waccamaw 2-A Conference contest at South Robeson.
Johnson is a likely starter in Friday's loumey final round with the pos
sibility of Fleming or Daniels providing relief help.
"Lance started in the win over Hallsboro last week," said coach
Alderson. "His arm got a little sore in the second inning but we're hoping
he will toughen up as the season goes on."
"Aldwin throws the ball well in the bullpen but he sort of short-arms
the ball and tries to guide it once he gets into the game. He tends to take a
little something off it (the ball)."
Trojan Netters Split With
South Robeson, St. Pauls
The West Brunswick boys' tennis
team split a pair of matches last
week taking an 8-1 Waccamaw 2- A
Conference win over South
Robeson while dropping an 8-1
nonleague decision to Sl.Pauls.
The second-place Trojans are
currently 2-1 in the WC and return
to action on Apr. 8 following the
Easter holidays.
