BRUCE WILLIAMS Extension Area Turf Specialist Dear Plant Doctor: My yard is full of holes the si/c of a golf ball with tunnels connecting the holes. I thought it was a snake and poured blcach in the hole. I love birds and want some thing that will not hurt them. Will you please tell me some- williams tiling to get rid of what-ever-it-is? Answer: Sounds like you have a bau ease of either moles or voles. Moles arc small mammals (hat feed primarily on insects, like grubs. Voles arc small mammals that feed primarily on vegetable matter, like the plants in your flower bed. Control of either of these animals is difficult. The safest method of controlling voles is through close mowing and the use of mouse traps. The placement of a mouse trap on the above ground runs is the only method of control available to the homeowner. For vole control, poison baits arc illegal and potentially harmful to the environment. You have several options to con trol moles in your lawn. The tradi tional method is to treat with insec ticides to kill the insccts in your lawn therefore eliminating the food source attracting the moles. However, an environmentally safer solution is to use a mole trap. Mole traps are very effective when Celebrates Birthday Daisey Russ Thompkins of Russtown will celebrate her 92 nd birthday with a drop-in reception at her home Sunday, April 21, from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. All friends and relatives are invited. Place the trap early in the morning. Traps may have to be moved every two or three days to new tunnels. Several folks have told me that they have used some household chemical such as bleach or gasoline to control some kind of outdoor pest. This is a dangerous practice. Many of the household chemicals will cause severe environmental problems. Never use a chemical ex cept for its intended use. You mentioned that you arc a bird lover. Many spccies of birds feed on the grubs in your lawn. The moles, voles, snakes, grubs and birds form a complex natural web of checks and balances. Choose your pest control with thought. And, if pesticides are used, follow label instructions. Dear Plant Doctor: I would like to know if there are any publica tions in the library, extension office or bookstores that would contain details about plants native to the southeastern region of North Caro lina. Also, I cannot find any nurseries that carry these native plants, such as Jack-in-the-pulpit. Is there any nursery or mail order company that would keep me from going out in the woods for these plants? Answer: Yes, yes and yes. Multi tudes of good publications have been released about the unusual flo ra of southeast North Carolina. However, many are far too technical ^ ~ for ihc average gardener. C. Ritchie Bell, Ph.D., a retired U.N.C. professor of botany, has au thored or co-authored a number of excellent easy to read books describ ing native North Carolina plants. The "standard" for most south east U.S. plant identification is the Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas. by A.E. Radford, H.E. Ahlcs and C.R. Bell. This should be available in most libraries. The N.C. Department of Agricul ture publishes a booklet entitled Certified Nurseries and Plant Col lectors of North Carolina. Your county extension agent most likely has a copy, as well as would any cer tified plant nursery. Also, you may be able to obtain a copy by writing to the Plant Industry Division, N.C.D.A., P.O. Box 27647, Raleigh, N.C. 27611. This publication lists all North Carolina certified nurseries and the general categories of plant materials which they producc. Another excellent reference is the The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation by M.A. Dirr and C.W. Heuser. This publication contains excellent up-to-date refer ences for the inquiring mind. The North Carolina Slate Univer sity Arboretum Newsletter is proba bly the most up-to-date periodical detailing the information you are re questing. This newsletter is sent to all members of the Friends of NC SU Arboretum. J.C. Raulston, Ph.D., docs a superb job of putting this newsletter together.
