PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Weinstein Gets Merit Award In Azalea Festival Art Show Emily Wcinstein of Holden Bcach received a merit award in the Azalea Festival Art Show in Wilm ington for her shadow box in oils and mixed media, "Don't Turn Around ? He Just Walked In." Miss Weinstein is Visiting Artist this year at Brunswick Community College. She was among about 90 area artists to participate in the show at Sl Thomas Preservation Hall, which was sponsored by the Wilmington Art Association. Speight Honored North Brunswick High School sophomore Charlie Speight was hon ored by the Brunswick County Board of Commission ers Monday night *?r *1 SPEIGHT Speight, the youngest person ever elected as president of the N.C. Associa tion of Distribu tive Education Clubs of Amer ica (DECA), re ceived a resolution from the board recognizing his academic achieve ments and leadership skills. He served as vice president of the state association as a freshman last year. Brunswick County has 110 DE CA members and will send six stu dents and two teachers to the na tional conference this year, said Speight, who told commissioners that education in Brunswick County isn't as bad as often reported. "Every day, at school. I see so many successes," Speight said. Completes Course Pvt. Bradley W. Anderson Jr. has completed the basic field artillery cannoneer course at Fort Sill, Okla. During the coursc, students were tai'ght the duties of howitzer or gun section crewman. They also receiv ed instruction in communications, maintenance and the handling or ammunition and explosives. Anderson is the son of Brad and Pat Anderson of Lcland and the grandson of Buddy and Jane Ander son of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Completes Training Navy Seaman Recruit Mark A. Taylor, son of Bruce E. Taylor of Route 5 (Pier 1), Shallotte, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla. During the eight-week cycle, he studied general military subjects such as seamanship, closc order drill. Naval history and first aid. Taylor joined the Navy in De cember 1990. Makes Honor Roll Kimberly Anne Baxley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Baxley of Shallotte, has been named to the third quarter honor roll at Salem Academy. Miss Baxley is a junior at Salem Academy, a four-year college pre paratory school for girls located in Winston-Salem. Mims Selected West Brunswick High School has chosen Billy Mims as employee of the month for April. Mims teaches physical education, coaches the var sity basketball team and organizes the annual UNC Seniors All-Star Basketball Game. Mims began his teaching career in Jacksonville, Fla., where he taught for six years. He moved to Shallotte in 1988. During his 10 years in education, Mims has taught mathematics, Eng lish, economics and physical educa tion. Patrolman Charges Driver For Not Reporting Wreck A South port man was charged with driving left of center and failing to report an accident after the Mcr cedes Benz which he was driving ran off the road and struck some trees. Ioannis Vogiatzis, 33, was travel ing east on N.C. 211 about seven miles southeast of Bolivia around 5:15 a.m. last Thursday when the accident occurred, reported State Trooper T.W. Caulder. Caulder said Vogiatzis ran off the road on the right shoulder, crossed back to the left shoulder, crossed a ditch and struck some small trees. The driver, who was not injured, left the scene but was contacted lat er, Caulder said. Damage was listed at S3, 000 to the car. In another accident Saturday morning, a Bolivia woman says she was forced off the road by a white pickup truck, causing her car to overturn in a ditch about three miles north of Bolivia on U.S. 17. SC overturned, reported Slate Trooper D.A. Lewis. The car came to rest upside down in the ditch. Ms. Newman stated she was forced off the road by a truck, said Lewis, who did not file charges. Although the driver was not in jured, two passengers received minor injuries. Brittany Marshall, 5, and Skyler Randolph, 4, were taken to The Brunswick Hospital in Supply following the 10:30 a.m. accident. Damage was estimated at SI 2,000 to the car. In another single-car accident early Saturday, a Camp Lejeune man was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car he was driv ing ran off the road and overturned. Terrancc Chevene Johnson, 27, was traveling south on U.S. 17 about S miles south of Shallotte when the accident occurred around 7:30 a.m? Caulder reported. According to the report, Johnson pulled from behind another car to pass but swerved back into his lane when he saw another car approach ing. His 1989 Subaru ran off the road, overturned once and came to rest upright in a ditch, Caulder re ported. Johnson received Class B injuries, incapacitating but not seri ous, and was taken to The Bruns wick Hospital for treatment. Three passengers, Charles Wilson, 21, Corey Hawkins, 20, and Darren Darbcy, 20, each received minor in juries but were not taken to the hos pital. Damage was listed at $6,000 to the car. Rabies Clinic Offers Shots Area veterinarians will return to the road this Saturday to offer rabies shots to cats and dogs for county pet owners at 12 locations. By state law. cats and dogs four months or older are required to be vaccinated against rabies. Sponsored by the Brunswick County Health Department in conjunc tion with local veterinarians, the clinic offers rabies shots for $5 each. Distemper and Parvo shots will also be available. The county meeting is scheduled Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Public Assembly Building in Bolivia. Guest speaker will be David Webster, marine biologist from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. An N.C. Wildlife Re sources Commission representative will discuss federal and state regula tions on sea turtles. The Holden Beach group will hold its first meeting of the year Thursday. April 25, at 7 p.m. in the town hall. Gail Miller, marine science edu cator with the N.C. Aquarium, and Jim Bahen, marine advisory agent with the U.N.C. Sea Grant Program, will be the guest speakers. People who attend the meeting will receive information on slate and county sea turtle preservation policies, patrol organization, logger head turtle biology and turtle ex cluder devices. Girl Scouts Meet At Seaside Past and present Girl Scouts will be gathering at the Food Lion in Seaside this weekend to share their scouting experiences. Scouts will meet at the grocery store this Saturday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Former scouts will be asked to sign a guest book and place a dot on a world map showing where they became involved in scouting. The purpose of the "Supermarket for Volunteers" is to recognize pre sent and past Girl Scouts in eastern North Carolina, said local Girl Scouts spokesperson Vickie Poole. The program coincides with National Volunteer Week (April 21 27) and the Girl Scout's annual ap preciation day for volunteer leaders. The 10ih annual observance of Girl Scout Leader's Day will be Monday, April 22. Thousands of women and men nationwide will be honored for their voluntary contri butions to Girl Scouting. To celebrate the day, Mrs. Poole said Girl Scouts and their families often present troop leaders with homemade gifts and cards. More than 750,000 Girl Scout adults serve 2.4 million girls in the United States. Three of the students will attend Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem, said Mary Wolf, director of pupil per sonnel services with Brunswick County Schools. The other four students will at tend the eastern school at St. And rews College in Laurinburg. Both schools will run June 23 through Aug. 3. Students who will attend the western school are Pcrty Dion Gris sett, a lOth-grader at West Bruns wick who will study natural sci ence; Ronald Glenn Drown, 10th, South Brunswick, natural science; and Malik James Flamer, 11th, North Brunswick, mathematics. Area students chosen for the east ern school arc Jason Keith Lanier, 10th, South Brunswick, choral mu sic; Karen Elaine Blackmon, 10th, South Brunswick, dance; Charlie Edward Speight, 10th, North Bruns wick, mathematics; and Terri An toinette Smith. 11th, South Bruns wick, natural science. Ms. Wolf said each school and each county in the slate nominates students for Governor's School based on test scores, grades and recommen dations. Notary Class Offered April 23-24 A course for persons who are in terested in becoming a notary public will be offered Tuesday and Wed nesday, April 23 and 24 at Bruns wick Community College. Brunswick County Tax Admini strator Boyd Williamson will teach the class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day. The class will meet in the teaching auditorium of the ALS Building at BCC's main campus on U.S. 17 north of Supply. A S25 fee is payable to BCC at the first class meeting.
