Seay Resigns As West Athletic Director; Small Named Successor BY JOHNNY CRAIG Marshall Seay's dual employment as head football coach and athletic director at West Brunswick was par tially severed last week when the five-year coaching veteran resigned as Trojan athletic director. Former West Brunswick boys' and girls' tennis coach Jerry Small was immediately named Seay's suc cessor by school principal Ed Lemon. However, Small won't begin his official duties as Trojan AD until the beginning of the 1991-92 school year. 'The past five years have been very productive for West Brunswick. With tremendous support of our Board of Education, County Commissioners, community and students, we have made great strides towards excel lence," said Seay in a letter of resignation to Lemon last Monday. "Our athletic department has come out of the cellar of the Waccamaw Conference and taken its right ful place among the contenders year in and year out." "Our facilities are very much improved and the par ticipation of our students in athletics has reached an all time high. The attitudes of our athletes are very good in regards to academics, discipline and athletic improve ment," Scay continued. Scay indicated his prime reason for resigning the athletic director post will be to concentrate on the con tinuing improvement of the Trojan football program. "This is a move that 1 have contemplated for quite some time," said Scay. "1 have mixed emotions howev er, at the present time, 1 feci that it would be better for our athletic program for me to focus on football." "Our football program is in need of much attention and my efforts will be expended on my players. Jerry Small has my full respect and support as our new athlet ic director." "For the past five years I have been very involved with the upgrading of this department. For the next five years I wish to concentrate on football," said Scay. "It is my goal to improve on our reputation of 'being tough' and to add to that 'being great,'" explained Scay. 'To take our football program to the next level will be a great challenge. It will require great planning and preparation and a determined effort to see that these things fall into place." During Seay's five-year tenure as West Brunswick athlctic director he coordinated such new facilities in cluding those of baseball and Softball parks, improved strength-training, practicc fields, coaches office, locker room, two tennis courts, football stadium and track im provements and irrigation systems for all fields. "I am very pleased with the progress that we have made in facilities over the past five years. It has been a team effort ? a real community effort," Scay said. The Spartanburg, S.C., native came to West Brunswick in May, 1986, and in his five years has be come the winningest Trojan football coach in school history with an overall record of 35-18. Scay led the Trojans to the 1988 Waccamaw Conference champi onship and two Brunswick County grid lilies as well. Seay began his first season in 1986 with only five returning players from a 2-8 team and guided the Trojans lo immediate success and a vastly-improved 7 3 campaign. West Brunswick will feature 26 reluming varsity players on the 1991 team thai begins play this fall. Also included will be some 25 players from the Trojan junior varsity squad and 30 from the two-year unbeaten West Brunswick junior high team. "The 1991 team looks like that 1988 bunch," said Seay comparing the upcoming team to the most recent Trojan conference championship squad. "Our team this fall may be even better with more numbers and more size."
