LETTERS Lottery Just Another Source Of Revenue (Continued From Preceding Page) the government stepped in and crc aieu programs- ? wcli financed pro grams ? to "help" the black family. This is not a racial issue, the same phenomena occurs where welfare is offered rather than op portunity. Sweden is a prime exam ple ? their families arc falling apart faster than the black families of this country. More than half the chil dren born in Sweden are the result of unwed pregnancies. The very same bell is tolling in the white families of this nation. Welfare programs do not help ? they stifle opportunity. The general public normally blames the recipi ents for the failure instead of the creators. Money thrown at prob Isms will always be intercepted at the honey pot. There is no way for students and poor people to score a point on this playing field. Jess Parker Supply Plan Move To Calabash To the editor: During the last week of October last year and Easter weekend this year, my fiancee and I visited Sunset Beach and Calabash. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves each trip and plan another this coming October. The most outstanding attraction we enjoyed was the people in an around the area. Both trips we were treated with kindness and generosi ty and made to feel at home. It seems as if someone must be doing something right and they are to be commended for their efforts! During our trip in October we will not only be vacationing but al so looking into the possibilities of making Calabash our home. We have a subscription to your news paper and try to keep up with ev erything going on, but it just isn't the same as being a part of it We think of Calabash as "coun try on the bcach." To everyone in Calabash and the South Brunswick Islands... great job! Scott Caserta & Crystal Jacks Huntington, West Virginia [ warn PHOTO CY BILL FAVIH rnviv b i nu. r?i BIRDS can join flowers and budding trees and warmer weather as signs of Spring for us. Return Of Birds Sign Of Spring BY BILL FAVER Some of the signs of Spring arc quite cvident-thc flowers and shrubs with their col orful blossoms, the warming of the air, the budding and new growth on plants and trees. Birds arc another sign of Spring for those who take time to notice them, whether at a backyard feeder or on a field trip to the bcach. We have several types of birds in the Springtime. We can have our permanent residents, who are with us all year. We can see them at any time of the year and the only difference in Spring may be in the newness of their feathers. Cardinals and mock ingbirds arc good examples of this type. We also have our winter visitors. These birds have spent the winter with us and will return to more north ern areas as the weather warms. Some of the finches and orioles arc examples of these. In the Spring and again in the Fall we have a large group of birds who arc just passing through. These tran sients may stay with us for a few days or a few weeks, but they are on their way from their wintering grounds to northern places where they will nest and raise their young. In the Fall they will pass through again, with their young birds, to seek warmer places. Many shore birds are of this type. Some of these migrants stop off with us for the summer and we call them summer residents. Our beautiful Painted Bunting is a very good example of these birds. Purple Martins are another. So, along with flowers and budding trees and warmer weather, we can expect the return of some of our most interesting bird species to be a sign of Spring. Whether we recognize them by sight or re member their song, we can welcome them as we wel come Spring to our special place where land and sky and sea come together.
