Hundreds Attend First Annual Earth Day Fair
Students at one station took turns
petting everything from a small boa
constrictor to a newly-hatched
chick.
Other fourth graders were busy
making paper from pulp or learning
about soil contamination and com
posting techniques.
It was an educational field trip
for students from Bolivia
Elementary and Southport Primary
schools during the first Brunswick
County Earth Day Fair last
Wednesday at Smithfield District
Park in Southport.
"For our first one, it's been a
tremendous success," said Terry
Munn, director of Brunswick Clean
County.
The first annual Earth Day Fair
was sponsored by Brunswick Clean
County and the Brunswick County
Agricultural Extension Service.
"Roughly, we've had about 200
students participate today," Munn
said.
The fair topped off a week of
Earth Day events held to ceiebraie
National Keep America .Beautiful
Month and Earth Day 1991, which
was Sunday, April 21. The theme of
this year's Earth Day is, "Let's not
waste the nineties."
However, the theme locally is
one printed in bright green on T
shirts and caps given to each stu
dent who participated in the fair,
"Make Earth Day Everyday."
The first Earth Day was in 1970
when Sen. Gaylor Nelson of
Wisconsin proclaimed it would be
the beginning of "one of the tough
est and most political fights this
country has ever seen."
Clean County also held a volun
teer drive last week, conducted a
desktop paper recycling drive with
area businesses and honored volun
teers who man the county's eight re
cycling stations.
