School Board Hires Three
Summer School Directors
Hiring of summer school direc
tors and other personnel matters
dominated a continued session of
the Brunswick County Board of
Education meeting Monday night in
Southport.
The meeting was a continuation of
the board's May 6 regular meeting.
In addition to hiring summer
school directors, the board approved
a list of routine personnel actions
and granted tenure to a number of
tcachcrs.
Also, Gloria Young, staff devel
opment director, introduced six state
Teaching Fellows who are observ
ing Brunswick County Schools this
week.
The group of rising college se
niors includes Michelle Hart,
daughter of a former school board
member, Marie Hart of Southport.
In addition to briefings by central
office personnel on topics ranging
from teacher certification to school
finance, the six arc visiting in vari
ous schools and classrooms around
the county.
Summer school directors chosen
arc Sandra Robinson, South Bruns
wick; Latty Stanley, Shallottc Mid
dle; and Tom Simmons, Lcland

principal at West Brunswick and
Simmons is acting assistant princi
pal at Union Primary School. Stan
ley is assistant principal at South
port Elementary.
This year summer school direc
tors will have classroom teaching
responsibilities in addition to ad
ministrative duties, said Ralph
Ward, personnel director.
He anticipates that each summer
school site will be slalTcd with up to
10 teachers, three teacher assistants
and a custodian, plus school bus
drivers as needed. Those positions
have not been filled.
Routinely approved were those
personnel actions:
?Hiring of Elizabeth Locus, Wilm

the central office; Steve Johnson,

tutor, Leland Middle. The tutors
were hired for short-term stints,
starting April 13 and ending during
May.
Also approved was the hiring of
George Bruce, Bolivia, as a custodi
an at South Brunswick High School
and reassignment of Michael
Hankins of Bolivia from custodian
at South Brunswick High to head
custodian at the same school;
?Medical leave of absence for Allie
Peterson of Leland, a first grade
teacher at Lincoln Primary;
?Resignation of Cynthia Antill of
Shallottc, a science teacher at West
Brunswick High School; and
?Approval as substitute teachers of

Vemon, Leland, William Fly the of
South port; Orville Hinshaw, Rocky
Point; Rebecca Huntsman, Sarah Ru

Classes Experiment
With Communication
Several classes at Bolivia Elemen
tary School recently explored two
different forms of communication
? the written word and visual art.
One group of fourth graders com
municated their enjoyment of Shel
Silvcrstcin's poetry recently by
reading stories of their u.- n to Betty
Cheers' second grade class.
The stories written and shared by
Gloria Reaves' language arts class
were inspired by their reading of
Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk
Ends.
In other activity at the school,
fourth and fifth grcJe art students
recently hosted a visit from Emily
Weinstein, visiting artist at Bruns
wick Community College, and her
dog, Daisy Mae. She discussed
c'ides of her work and as students
watched her work, demonstrated
portraiture in charcoal, pastels and
water color.
