Rotarians Help Flood Victims In Bangladesh The Rotary Club of the South Brunswick Islands is helping with disaster relief activities in Bangla desh. The local chapter sent a S785 check to the Dhaka Bangladesh Rotary Club last week to help fami lies there who were hit by a massive storm April 30, said Milton Iossi, local Rotary Club president. That storm killeid around 140,000 people and left approximately 10 million others homeless in low-ly ing southern parts of the impover ished South Asian country of 110 million people. The South Brunswick Islands club has a sister-club relationship with the original Dhaka Club, the first of 18 in Bangladesh's capital. Iossi was a member of the Dhaka Club from 1983 to 1985. At the district assembly in Jack sonville, N.C., last week, Rotary International District 7730 made an appeal to local clubs to seek dona tions to help Bangladesh, Iossi said. Rotary International began in 1905 and is now in 174 nations. It promotes world peace, international service, plus friendship and ethical standards in business and profes sional activities. "Needless to say, small donations of U.S. dollars often go a long way in providing relief in poorer Third World economies," Iossi said. Organizations or individuals wishing to donate should contact a local Rotarian. The Rotary Club of the South Brunswick Islands meets for break fast each Friday, at 7:30 a.m., at the Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club on Old Georgetown Road near Calabash. Visitors are welcome. Genealogy Seminar Focuses On Research A genealogy seminar will be held Saturday, May 18, at the Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wilmington. Three rotating workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a light luncheon served, said Caro lynn Skipper, spokesman. Bob High of Whiteville, a Civil War historian and author, will teach a workshop on doing Civil War re search from old newspapers. Bob Brown, a professional ge nealogist from Lexington, Ky? will speak on "Solving the Unsolvable." Kevin Fisher, an experienced ge nealogist from Whiteville, will teach use ot the Family Center's li brary resources, which include com puters and microfiche readers as well as files. The seminar is free and open to the public. Made by Industries for the Blind, the brooms are straw, with wooden handles, and cost $6 each, said Mike Blandino, president. Proceeds benefit the club's chari table work. Exhibit Features Bolivia Elementary Students Artwork Art work by Bolivia Elementary School students will be on exhibit through May 28 at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, said school media specialist Pat Ellis. Included in the show are pieces done in crayon, color pencil, pastel, oil pastel, water color, acrylic and tempera paint, as well as examples of printmaking, weaving, sculpture, pottery and clay jewelry. The young artists whose work is displayed are students of Bobbie Hurst. Admission to the show is free.
