STUDENTS IN THE NEWS Nine Earn Degrees From NCSU Nine students from Brunswick County received bachelor's degrees from N.C. State University Satur day in commencement exercises in Raleigh. John A. Justice of Route 1, Win nabow, received dual degrees in ani mal science and poultry science technology. Other graduates include James Watts Miller Jr., Sunset Beach, civil engineering-construction option; Rhonda Gail Evans, daughter of Rifton and Janice M. Evans of Route 2, Ash, middle grade educa tion-math and science; Daphne Annette King, daughter of Bennie K. and Annette D. King, Route 1, Ash, middle grade education-math and science; Jeffrey Allen Marlowe, Route 1, Ash, mechanical engineer ing; Pauline Hankins, Route 2, Bolivia, electrical engineering; Ter esa Raye Zuber, daughter of Ray A. Zubcr, Route 1, Shallotte, bachelor of science, chemistry; Mary M. Ballamine, daughter of Kristan R. Ballantinc, Southpoit, speech com munication; and Carolyn Gore Hankins, Southport, health occupa tions teacher education. Two Graduate Two Brunswick County residents graduated from North Carolina State University's Agricultural Institute May 10 in Raleigh. Phillip Jeffrey Russ, the son of Phillip and Brenda Russ of Route 7, Shallotte, completed his studies in December in livestock management and technology and field crops tech nology. The other local graduate is {Cather ine Hamilton McKeithan, the daugh ter of David and Patricia Sandifer of Holden Beach. She studied ornamen tals and landscape technology. Essays Chosen Two winners were chosen in Le land Middle School's "The Neces sity of a Good Breakfast" es say contest held April 29. Joy Babson, a sixth-grader, wrote the win ning essay for grades four through six. Breakfast helps babson to start the day off with energy and vitality, she wrote. Angela Gidley, an eighth-grader, wrote the win ning essay for grades seven and eight Eat ing breakfast is a crucial part of staying healthy and living long er, she said. Over 30 es says were sub mitted for judg ing by Sherryl Johnson, child nutri tion director. The winners will each receive a $25 savings bond. ' The contest is held to make stu dents aware of the school breakfast program. GIDLEY Baxley Recognized Kimberly Anne Baxley, of Shal lotte, won second place in Spanish song during Language Day at Salem College. She is ihe daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Baxley of Shallotte and a junior at Salem Academy, the college's preparatory boarding schools for girls. More than 300 high school stu dents completed in Language Day, which recognizes and rewards for eign language profiency developed in private andpublic school systems. Students competed in poetry, drama and music presentations in French, German, Latin and Spanish. Frink Graduates Leigh Ann Frink, daughter of Barry and Bird ie Frink of Shal lottc, will grad uate May 18 from Elon Col lege. She plans to begin gradu ate work this fall in English and rhetoric at N.C. State Uni versity before pursuing a career in publishing. The 1987 graduate of West Brunswick High School studied at the University of London during her sophomore year in college. Clark Honored The United States Achievement Academy has selected Leland ??I Middle School eighth-grader Jason Clark as a MB ' nited States |K%^,*iCbi9 National Honor ? ? - Roll Award ^ winner. Clark, the son . ? of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Clark of Leland, will ap clark pggj. jn unit ed States Achievement Academy's annual yearbook. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Walker of Wilmington and Mr. and Mrs. D.T. Clark Sr. of Leland. Hewett Receives Degree Marcus H. Heweu Jr. of Shallotte graduated May 12 from the Univer sity of North Carolina at Greens boro with a bachelor of science de gree in information systems and op erations management. Hewett, a 1982 graduate of West Brunswick High School, also has received associate degrees in com puter programming from Brunswick Community College and science from Southeastern Community Col lege in Whiteville. He is the son of Mark and Nellie Hewett of Shallotte. Makes Presentation Evelyn S. Johnson of Shallotte was one of 23 East Carolina Uni versity social work graduate stu dents who addressed state Senate and House committees last month as an advocate for child and family legislation. The graduate students presented reports at committee hearings on child abuse, neglect, family pre school services, child mental health and corporal punishment. Ms. Johnson is employed by the Brunswick County Department of Social Services. Serves As Page Perty D. Grissett, a sophomore at West Brunswick High School in Shallotte, serv ed as a page in the N.C. House of Representa tives the week of May 6. According to his sponsor, Rep. E. David Redwine (D Brunswick), the experience gave GRISSETT Grissett a new understanding of how laws are made. Eight Graduate At ECU Eight Brunswick County natives graduated from East Carolina Uni versity in Greenville Saturday, May 11. Earning degrees were Martin Luther Blue, of Leland, bachelor's in biology; Sharon Diane Fluegel, Shallouc, master's in speech ? lan guage and auditory pathology; Kathi B. Foglcman, Long Beach, master's in nursing; Melissa Stan ley, Shallotte, bachelor's in psychol ogy; Joyce H. Grimsley, Holden Beach, master's in social work; Janice Wilbanks Hickman, Winna bow, master's in social work; Evelyn Stanley Johnson, Shallotte, master's in social work; and Fauna Joy Willetts Schaub, Bolivia, mas ter's in social work. Dees Selected Margaret Christina Dees, a soph omore at North Brunswick High School, has been chosen to attend the 1991 Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation N.C. Leadership Semin ar East at Meredith College in Ral eigh, June 7-9. She will be one of 135 students to tour the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant in Apex and participate in panel discussions on education, business, media and medicine. Norris Graduates Barbara Norris of Shalloue gradu ated from Heritage Bible College in Dunn May 4 with an associ ate degree in Christian educa tion. A grand mother of five, she graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. She assisted in the business office and li- NORRIS brary and served as director of the yearbook staff. Mrs. Norris plans to re-enroll this fall to work toward a bachelor's degree. Jones Graduates William Mark Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Jones of Shallotte, graduated from Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va., May 1 1. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education and plans to tcach. Jones completed student teaching this spring at Marion High and Marion intermediate schools in Marion, Va. New Support Group Aids Mentally III A support group of family mem bers, friends and supporters of Brunswick County residents who suffer from mental illness will hold an organizational meeting next week. The Alliance for the Mentally 111 (AMI) will sponsor the meeting Monday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Public Assembly Building at the Brunswick County Government Center in Bolivia. AMI is a nationwide, grassroots organization that advocates belter health care for the mentally ill and mutual suuport for family members. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Tutors Trained For Literacy Council The Brunswick County Literacy Council trained eight new literacy tutors at a workshop May 2 and 3 at the office in Supply. Volunteers certified to teach read ing to adults using the phonics based Laubach method are Edith Bridger, John Richardson and Christine Hewetl of Shallottc; Cath erine Godley and Charles Campcn of Southport; Pam Parker of Long Beach; Betty Johnson of Yaupon Beach; and Randy Brashears of Leland. Rich Dixon was the trainer. The literacy council provides onc-on one help for non-reading adults and those who would like to improve their reading skills. Heweft Wins Archie Hewett of Supply won SI, 000 in the annual Moo-Doo Day sponsored by the West Brunswick High School Band April 27. Benjamin, a Brahma bull owned by James and Lcona Tripp of Ash, chose the winner when he answered nature's call with a deposit in a square on the football field claimed by Hewett. Proceeds from the event, approxi mately $3,200, will be ased to pay for band camp this summer at Camp Greer. Plaques Presented The Brunswick County Demo cratic Party presented plaques dur ing its May 9 membership meeting to Sam B. Somersett and Murry Stevens. Somersett received the Building Board Awaid for the work, time and money he donated for construction of the party headquarters building. McCoy, son of Bruce and Connie Taylor, of Route 5, Shallotte, has relumed from de ployment to the Middle East while serving there during Operation De sert Storm. He joined the Navy in February 1988. SULLIVAN CHEERS Honors Employees Betty Jo Cheers and Sandra Sullivan have been honored as em ployee and volunteer of the month, respectively, for May at Bolivia Elementary School. Employed by Brunswick County Schools for 20 years, Ms. Cheers is the second-grade chairperson. She graduated from Campbell College and UNC-Wilmington and lives in Bolivia with her husband, Billy Ray. They have two children, Stacie and Stephanie. Sullivan graduated from South Brunswick High in 1984 and helps with the school Books and Beyond reading program, media book fairs and fourth-grade activities. She lives in Leland with her hus band, Gary. They have two children. Michael and Kcnncih. Brittain Cited Marie Britlain has been chosen Bolivia Elemen tary School's bus driver of the month for May. She is a grad uate of South port High Scho ol and has been a teaching assis tant for 10 years. Ms. Brittain, brittain who attends An tioch Baptist Church, has driven a school bus for six years. She and her husband, David, live in Bolivia. They have two children, Jon and Amanda. Attends 4-H Comp Rachel Turner of Southport, Brunswick County's 4-H fashion re vue winner, attended the 4-H cloth ing camp at Betsy-Jeff Penn Camp in Rcidsville, May 3-4. She studied wardrobe planning and personal development. Partici pants were judged on garment con struction, fit, appearance and poise. Ms. Turner will attend the state fashion revue at the 4-H Club Con gress in Raleigh in July. Clemmons Returns Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Gregory Clemmons, son of Beverly A. Clemmons of Southport, recently returned from deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm. He was serving with Helicopter Squadron Three, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.
