South Valedictorian Urges Grads To Follow Lead Of U.S. Soldiers BY DOUG R UTTER Valcdiclorian Amelia Hawcs urged her South Brunswick High School classmates to follow the ex ample set by Americans who fought in Operation Desert Storm at gradu ation ceremonies last Friday. "We too must be brave and strong as we step out into the real world," Miss Hawcs told the class of 1991, reminding students they can be come whatever they want as long as they believe in themselves. South Brunswick Principal Mosc Lewis presented diplomas to ap proximately 193 seniors during the festive commencement at Cougar Stadium Friday night. Brunswick County Schools Superintendent P.R. Hankins told graduates they arc the future of our nation. "You have an awesome task ahead of you, trying to make the world a better place." Graduates shouldn't be afraid of their task, Hankins said, because their education has prepared them to become productive and capable citi zens. Brunswick County Board of Edu cation Chairman Donna Baxter, whose daughter was among the South Brunswick graduates, strcs sed good citizenship and commit mcnl to others. Being a good citizen means exer cising the right to vote, participating in local meetings, contacting elected officials and respecting the laws of society. Ms. Baxter said graduates should always care about others, become givers instead of takers and get in volved as volunteers. "I offer no quotes from famous people or no profound statement," she said. "Always be proud of who you are and where your roots arc, bccausc we sure are proud of you." Salutatorian Kristin Jones called graduation "a sunrise and a sunset" and a day that signifies a fork in the road. "On this day the past, present and future mingle together," she said. "We are about to leave the nest and test our own wings." As part of the ceremony, seniors Andrcna Evans and Lovely Man love sang One Moment In Time as a tribute to the class of '91. Class president Ernest Wcarrcn Jr. presented the class gift to the school, a S75 donation that will be used to purchase a plant for the lobby. The valedictorian, salutatorian and senior class president and 27 other South Brunswick seniors were recognized as both honor graduates and North Carolina Scholars. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Literacy Council Elects Officers John Cooper of Boiling Spring Lakes and Joe Stevenson of Supply will serve as co-chairmcn of the Brunswick County Literacy Council for a one-year that begins July 1. They were elected, along with other officers, at the council's annu al meeting held May 16 at Bruns wick Community College. Other officers are Helen Conrad of Shallottc, vice chairman; Doug Hall of Shallottc, secretary; and Larry Niclson of Boiling Spring Lakes, treasurer. During the annual meeting, seven volunteer tutors received senior tu tor certificates marking their first 40 hours given as Laubach tutors. Guest speaker was Charles Gilli kin of Morehead City, a former Laubach student. He emphasized the importance of confidentiality for students and the effectiveness of the one-on-one teaching method used in the Laubach program. Mintz Chosen J cane tie Mintz has been chosen employee of the month at West Brunswick High School due to her coordination of the annual blood drive. Mrs. Mint2 has been teaching for 10 years and presently teaches health occupations. She is a registered nurse and serves as the advisor for the Health Occupations Students As sociation (HOSA), which partici pates in local regional, slate and na tional events. She is married to Roy Mintz. They live at Ash and have three children. Completes Training Pvt. Elizabeth P. Gore has com pleted basic training at Fort Jack son, S.C. She received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, first aid and other areas. She is the daughter of Gertrud H. Freeman, of Route 9, Shallotte. Mabe Returns U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Walter J. Mabe, a 1984 gradu ate of South Brunswick High School, recently returned from de ployment to the Persian Gulf in sup port of Operation Desert Storm. Mabe served aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, homeported in Mayport, Fla. He joined the Navy in November 1986. Ford Returns U.S. Marine Cpl. Duan A. Ford, son of Cheri F. Graham, of Route 5, Leland, recendy returned from de ployment to the Persian Gulf in sup port of Operation Desert Storm. Ford serves with the 2nd Marine Division of Camp Lejeune, N.C. He joined the Marine Corps in August 1987. Midgett Honored Carol W. Midgett of Southport, a first-grade teacher at Southport Ele mcniary School, is among three teachers to be named state award winners in the Presidential Awards Program for Exccllcncc in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Selected from a field of 24 candi dates, the three will be honored at a June 19 dinner, according to Robert R. Jones of the N.C. Division of Public Instruction. One will be rcconizcd as the state's Presidential Award winner, receiving cash and other prizes as sociated with the honor. Cited For Arts Two local educators received cer tificates from the National Gallery of Art Monday night at the Bruns wick County Board of Education meeting for their work with the arts. Terry Rosenfelder of Wilming ton, art teacher at North Brunswick High School, was honored with the Teacher's Scholarship award, and Mark Owens of Supply, principal of Shallotte Middle School, with the Administrator's Scholarship award. The certificates were forwarded from the N.C. Division of Public In struction. Rabon Reappointed Jim Rabon of Southport has been reappointed to the Brunswick Com munity College Board of Trustees by unanimous vote of the Bruns wick County Board of Education Monday night. A retired educator, Rabon was appointed in 1983 to an eight-year term on the BCC board. Current terms are for four years.
