Even before laws required it, accident reports im pressed the skeptical with the truth that these things should actually be used and did save lives. In a boat, the equivalent is the PFD, the personal flotation device that should be easily accessible to everyone of every age while out on the water. In more than 80 percent of nearly 900 boating deaths each year, there were insufficient life jackets on board or they were inaccessible. According to John Ziefel, public relations director for the Shallotte River Power Squadron, there are five types of PFDs: ?Type I, the offshore life jacket, reversible and easiest to put on in an emergency; ?Type II, the near- shore vest, suitable for calm inland waters; ?Type III, the flotation aid, most popular of the group, designed for freedom of movement and comfort and used for water skiing, paddling or fishing; ?Type IV, the throwable device, to be thrown to someone in the wa ter, this one not recommended for children. Choosing life jackets for children demands some care. Clete Wald miller, commander of the Power Squadron, said parents should take time to read the information on a packagc. It will be sized according to the child's weight and should be tried on in the store to assure fit. Lift the child up by the shoulders of the PFD to make sure it doesn't slip over the chin or ears. Crotch straps are particularly important on chil dren's PFDs, as they keep the de vice in place. Since children lend to panic when they fall in the water, it is important to accustom them to wearing a PFD in the water before an emergency occurs. If a child docs not swim, a Type II U.S. Coast Guard-approved jack et is a must to keep the child's face up in the water. Though this device will keep a child afloat, Waldmiller cautions that it does not substitute for super vision. A child should be left unat tended on a boat or near the water.
