Wal-Mart Plans Scholarship
Wal-Mart, which plans to open a
75.794 square fool stoic in Shalloue
next spring, plans to demonstrate its
partnership with area residents

ment efforts, according to a corpo
rate news release.
The store plans to give a SI.(XK)
scholarship annually to a deserv ing
high school student from the
Shallotte area
"'I"hc goal of every local Wal
mart store is to become an active
part of the community, and by
working with area merchants, pro
mote that city as a retail trade cen
ter," said David Glass, the president
and chief executive officer of Wal
Mart. "We Uxik. forward to develop
ing a long-term partnership with the
area residents of Shallotte."
Also, the news release says the
store is expected to create approxi
mately 160 jobs for area residents, to
increase retail traffic and increase
sales lax revenues for the community.
Ilie 28-year-old Wal-Mart chain
reported sales of $32.6 billion and
net income of SI. 29 billion for the
fiscal year ending January * I .
6CC To Get Scholarship
Brunswick Community Cnlloeo
is one of ' l community colleges in
Ninth Carolina selcclcd to receive a
$550 scholarship from Carolina
Power and Light Company li>r the
IW| -92 academic year.
The 34 scholarships are available
to students in the CP&L service
area who arc enrolled in a course of
study leading to a two year degree.
The $550 scholarships will be di
vided into payments o! S2(H) lor the
lall quarter and SI 75 for the winter
and spring quarters.
According to CP&L Chairman/
President ShenvcKxl II. Smith Jr.,
this is the fifth year thai his compa
ny has offered scholarships to local
community college students.
"We have found that one of the
best ways lo help the community is
to invest in education," Smith said.
"We re proud lo support our com
munity colleges."

Coast Host Elects Craig
John M. (Johnny) Craig of Craig
Realty, Holdcn Beach, was elected
southern vice president of North
Carolina Coast Host at the organiza
tion's June 7 meeting' in
Jacksonville. He will represent the
Cape Fear and Brunswick Islands
areas.

Employment in Brunswick County
rose I S percent between March and
April 1091. according to data com
piled by the Center for Business and
Economics Services at the University
of North Carolina at Wilmington.
The center compiles data from
across the region in preparing
monthly indexes and reports on eco
nomic conditions.
The April 1991 level, with
15.541 people working, was 7.5
percent below the April 1990 level
of 16,798 employed.
Unemployment in the county fell
3.5 percent between March and
April, from 11.3 percent to 10.8 per
cent. with 1,879 seeking employ
ment in April. I1k April 1991 level
was below the March 1901 level of
11.3 percent, but above the April
1990 rate ot 7.8 percent, when 1.431
people were looking for work.
Winter Sales Drop
Retail sales in Brunswick County
fell 0.7 percent between January
and February, from S27.8 million to
S27.6 million.
The February level was 3.8 per
cent below the February 1990 level
of S28.7 million.
However, for the year ending in
February, retail sales in the county
were 10.9 percent above the compa
rable year-earlier level, i.e., the level
for the 12-month period ending
February 1990. Sales increased front
S315.9 million to S350.3 million.

tered in the county.
For the year ending in May, new
vehicle registrations lor the county
were 16.5 percent below the compa
rable year-earlier level, dropping
from 2,242 to 1,872.
Construction Climbs In May
Permits for more than S2.3 mil
lion in construction were issued by
the Brunswick County Building In
spection Department in May.
Inspectors issued 480 permits for
S2, 39 1,1 59 in total value. Of those
permits, 202 were for buildings, 187
for electrical, 15 for plumbing and
76 for mechanical inspections.
Seventeen single-family permits
were issued for SI. 159,744 in value.
Also. 1(H) mobile home were per
mitted along with four commercial
buildings listed as having a com
bined value o! S*)98,857.
Other permits were as follows: 12
additions, SI 20,868; three garages,
S75.440; six decks and porches,
SI 9.6 10; and 13 signs, SI 6,640.
For the year, 1,775 permits have
been issued, 73 for single-family
homes valued at S4.6 million and 20
commercial permits for S2.4 million
in value.
Total value of new construction
this year stands at S8.6 million.

to General Manager Russell Price.
The June 1991 book features a
new "community interest" section
with glossy pages and large color
photographs in addition to the usual
phone number listings and Yellow
Pages.

lands towns, local sightseeing desti
nations, special events such as festi
vals and fishing tournaments, pro
files of 16 area golf clubs and tips
on boating safety and what to do in
the event of a hurricane.
"I have been getting quite a few
compliments on it," Price said. "It's
an attention-getter "

Price said individuals or compa
nies can pick up extra phone books
at the Atlantic Telephone office.

Brunswick County Recycling Co
ordinator Terry Munn said old phone
can be dropped off at the Atlantic
Telephone office on N.C. 130 west
of Shallotte or at McDonald's in
Lcland.
Recycling trailers around the
county arc presently not accepting
phone Nx>ks because there is no
market for them, Munn said.
