CEDAR GROVE AREA NFWS Families , Nation Salute Roots Du ring Holiday This weekend marks a lime of beginnings lor our nation and brings family, friends and others together from faraway places to ex press their com mendations and support for the greatest nation in the world and the only one with the motto, "In God We Trust." Many fami lies gather over the July 4th holiday to celebrate their own roots as well, including the Hcwett, Bryant and Reaves clans locally. Descendants of the late Jim and Holland Lancaster Biyant used to gather at the home of Annie R. Bryant, but this year as last their re union will be at the District II Community Building on Stanbury Road Saturday, July 6. Many will worship together at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, then share in the Riley Hewett reunion scheduled af ter Sunday's worship service. The Major Daniel Reaves family reunion takes place Saturday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at the Piney Grove Community Building in Bolivia, with worship at Kendall Chapel Church or at an alternate location announced at Saturday's picnic. The Riley Hewcu reunion will take place at the Discirict II Com munity Building on Stanbury Road Sunday, July 7, following the wor ship service at Cedar Grove. Bryant-llankins Reunion Held Sunday morning found members of the Bryant-Hankins family wor shipping together at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church as part of their reunion. Addressing the congregation on the family's behalf was James Covington II of Charlotte, the son of Ether Covington anil the late James Robert Covington Sr. The family picnicked Saturday at Waccamaw Township Park and also enjoyed a family dinner at the home of Thomas and Edna Cause, pre pared by Arvella Marlowe. Student Honored Eugene and Madeline Hewetl's granddaughter, Tancidra DcNanc Hcwctt, has been recognized for her achievements as a third grade stu dent at Guilford Middle School in Greensboro. She is the daughter of Lori Hcwctt. Tancidra received the Super intendent's Award for earning all A's throughout the year, an acadcm ic cxcellencc award from the Black Caucus at North Carolina A. & T. University and an art award for a collagc. Over the River. She did well on standardized testing this year and will be in an academically gifted class again next year. Con gratulations, Tancidra! Robinson Recognized Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Shallottc recognized Donnie Robinson as its oldest male member during its 11 o'clock wor ship service Sunday. He has cele brated his 79lh birthday. Lewis Stanley, secretary, did the honors. Weekly Scripture The Scripture of the week comes from Psalms 41, "Blessed is he that considercth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the time nf irnnhie " Seaside UMC To Break Ground For Building On Anniversary Seaside United Methodist Church will celebrate two major events in the life of the congregation Sunday, July 7 ? its sccond anniversary and the groundbreaking for its first per manent building. Birthday celebrations arc planned as part of the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services, with the ground breaking to be held at 12 noon. A motorcade of members and friends of the church will travel from Seaside's meeting place on N.C. 179 to the church building site on N.C. 904 for the ccremcny, return ing afterwards for light refresh ments. Officials in local towns have been invited to attend. Representing the North Carolina Annual Conference at the event will be the Rev. Dr. Sam McMillan, su perintendent of the Wilmington Dirrict. He will be presenting a S25,(XX) grant from the Board of Missions, Inc. of the United Methodist Church to Seaside, said the Rev. Camillc Yorkcy Edwards, pastor. The grant is one of four the church has received or cxpccts to receive for the building project. Others include two grants of S25.000 each from the S10 Club for the land and building, a S75,0(X) grant from the Duke Endowment Fund and 5100,000 from the United Methodist Spiiil of Tomorrow capital project fund. Members arc also raising SI 63 ,500 through yard sales, spaghetti dinners and other projects and have compiled a cookbook that will be available this summer. Another S35 1,500 will be bor rowed. Paul Justice is chairman of Seaside UMC's building committee and Al Morrison is chairman of the building finance committee. The 9.100 square foot multipur pose building is cxpcctcd to cost ap proximately S765,000. It will be constnictcd on a five-acre tract along N.C. 904. It will include a multipurpose room, gathering hall, kitchen, support wing with offices and choir room, and educational wing with classrooms. An adjacent playground is planned. Odcll and Virginia Williamson donated 3.2 acres of the property and the church purchased the other two acres. Seaside UMC was organized fol lowing a community needs survey RELIGIOUS BRIEFS Earlier Worship Schedule Planned During the summer months, Shal lottc Presbyterian Church is holding its worship services at 10 a.m., ac cording to the Rev. William Thom as, interim pastor. On September 8, the church will resume its usual schedule of 9:45 a.m. Sunday School and 11 a.m. worship. The church is located at 5070 Main Street, Shallottc. Bible School Planned New Life Assembly will hold Vacation Bible School July 8-12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme is Share God's Bles sings. Ages 3 to 18 are invited. Commencement will be Sunday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m. A Bible School parade through the local community will be held Sunday, July 7. Groups To Sing Two local groups will be featured in a sing Sunday, July 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Light Pentecostal Church on Exum Road, Ash. Featured will be the Richardson Family and Von Ferguson and the Coasialaires. The public is invited. Custer At Chapel Dr. Harold Custer, a Methodist minister from Parkersburg, W.V., is the pastor of the week at The Hold en Beach Chapel. He will deliver the message Sun day, July 7, at the interdenomina tional chapel on Rothschild Street, Holden Beach.
