Prep Football Practice
Just Around The Corner
BY JOHNNY CRAIG
Pre season high school football practice gels under way at West
Brunswick and throughout North Carolina next Thursday, Aug. 1.
North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules allow prep
coaches to drill their players only oncc per day for the first week of practice
but provide for two-a-day workouts beginning the second week.
West Brunswick opens its season Friday. August 30. hosting North
Myrtle Beach, S.C., while the Trojan junior varsity kicks oil ius 10-gamc
campaign a night earlier (Aug. 29) at Ta'uor Ci'y.
The Trojan varsity will also face Mullins, S.C. and South Brunswick in
its three-game nonconfcrence schedule before opening Waccamaw 2-A
Conference play Sept.. 27 at defending league co-champion Whitevillc.
West Brunswick w ill actually face South Brunswick twice this season
with the first meeting being counted as a nonconfcrence affair. The tradi
tional regular-season finale between the two rivals will count as a confer
ence contest.
The Trojans dropped nonconfcrence games with 1-A opponents
Southwest Onslow and St. Pauls from a year ago and added contests
against the pair of 2-A foes Mullins and South Brunswick.
Rounding out West Brunswick's league schedule w ill be games against
North Brunswick, West Columbus, East Bladen, South Robeson and
Fairmont.
*****
Defending Waccamaw Conference co-champion Whitevillc also an
nounced its 1991 schedule last week.
The Wolfpack, coming off a 9-3 season last year, opens the new cam
paign hosting defending state 2-A champion Clinton of the East Central
Conference.
Despite all its conference and slate playoff success during recent years,
Whitevillc hasn't won a season opener since 1987.
Clinton breezed to the state title last year with a perfect 1 5-0 iccord
and has won 27 of its last 28 games. The Dark Horses will certainly pro
vide Whitevillc w ith a quick challenge to the grid season.
The Wolfpack will also face Columbus County rivals Hallsboro and
Tabor City in other nonconfcrence games.
Mintz's Mound Performance Improves
Former North Brunswick baseball star Stephen Mintz has improved his
pitching record to an even 3-3 in 20 games this season for the Los Angles
Dodgers' Class A, Bakcrsfield, California, team.
Playing in the California League, Mintz has a 3.60 earned nin average
and has also recorded three saves.
He began the season as a pitchcr/catcher for Bakcrsfield.
Post 137 Advances To Eastern Finals
Local American Legion baseball champion Whitcvillc Post 137 ad
vanced to the Area II championship series Sunday with a four-game sweep
of Faycttcvillc Stedman.
Whitevillc (28-5) will meet the winner of the Pitt County-North
Raleigh series for the area title.
Post 137 swept Brunswick County Post 68 in three games in its open
ing playoff series before downing Wilmington Post 10 in six games to ad
vance to meet Stedman.
Whitevillc is the defending N.C. American Legion champion and ap
pears a good bet to land yet another state legion title.
