Storm Floods First Street
1 four-wheel drive piekup truck drives down a flooded First Street at Ocean Isle Heoch during a severe thunderstorm Saturday. Ocean
Isle II each Fire Chief Terry Harhee said he wasn't aware of any property damage caused by the storm. "I don't ever recall seeing as much

SEWER SYSTEMS NEED REPAIRS
Health Officials Cite Ocean Isle Business
BY TKRRY POPK
An Ocean Isle Beach business
woman has been ordered to appear in
court on charges that she has failed
in repair a leaky sewer system.
In an unrelated case, a Bclvillc
businessman faces a Friday dead
line for submitting plans on how he
will correct a leaky sewer system at
his motel.
The Brunswick County Health
Department has filed charges
against Betty Gore, owner of a buil
ding that houses the Ocean Isle Sca
fcxxi Market on N.C. 179 just west
of the town limits. She is accused of
failing to provide a sanitary means
of sewage disposal, a misdemeanor,
said John Crowder, environmental
health supervisor 1.
The case has been scheduled for
Brunswick County District Court,
Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Last month, Ms. Gore was given
30 days to make repairs to a sewer
system at a building that, in recent
months, has also housed a nightclub
upstairs. Crowder said the deadline
passed Friday, July 5, with no im
provements made.
At a meeting of the Brunswick
County Board of Health on July 8,
some residents complaincd that the
leaking system was causing a health
hazard and claimed it was draining
into a ditch that feeds into the At
lantic Intracoastal Waterway.
Crowder said the owner has no
room to upgrade the sewer system
without purchasing additional prop
erty. The town's sewer lines do not
extend to the business.
The health department can issue a
criminal summons for persons to
appear in court on misdemeanor
charges for violating county ordi
nances if they fail to make repairs to
sewer systems by a deadline. The
maximum penalty is a S50 fine and
30 days in jail.
"We do co to court about two or
three times a year," said Crowder.
Correction
An article in the July 11 issue of
The Brunswick Beacon gave the
wrong name for an Ocean Isle
Beach Police officer who was pro
moted July 1.
The officer promoted from
sergeant to lieutenant was James
Stewart, not Jimmy Stewart as was
reported.
The Beacon regrets the error.

"Wc like to give them enough lime
to comply. Sometimes wc have to
take further legal action."
Health officials may also take le
gal action against Albert Sidney
Boncy, owner of the Town and
Country Motel in Belville, for his
alleged failure to repair a leaky
sewer system there.
In May, Boncy was ordered to re
pair a scptic tank system that serves
his motel and several mobile homes
at a lot on Main Street. Belville
docs not have a town sewer system.
Residents complained that an
open drain line from the system was
leaking into a ditch that feeds into
the Brunswick River.
Following a reccnt check, envi
ronmental health specialists report
ed the drain pipe has been removed,
said Crowdcr.
"He has complied with part of the
order," Crowdcr said. "The sewage
is not going into the ditch any
more."
However, Boncy was also or
dered to provide the health depart
ment with plans on how he will up
grade the existing sewer system to
stop the leakage.
"1 have not seen a copy of any
plans," Crowder said on Monday.
Boney was given 30 days to sub
mit the plans. That deadline is Fri
day, July 26.
Health specialists inspected the
motel's sewer system following a
raid on the business in late April
that resulted in multiple charges of
cruelty to animals against Boney.
More than 250 birds and 14 dogs
were confiscated from the motel pet
operation during the raid. Boney
pleaded guilty to misdemeanor
charges and received a suspended
sentence in Brunswick County Dis
trict Court.
Low-Flying Plane Prompted Search
Local cmcrgcncy volunteers re
mained on alert for I 1/2 hours Tues
day before a search was called off
for an airplane feared to have gone
down somewhere between N.C. 130
andN.C. 211 north of U.S. 17.
Several county residents reported
seeing an airplane that appeared to
be in trouble and Hying at trcetop
level before it disappeared from
view in the Mill Branch Road area
off N.C. 1 30 west of Shallottc.
Waccamaw Fire Department and
Rescue Squad responded, said Pre
sident Malcolm Long, along with
Shallottc VRS as mutual aid.
Initial radio reports suggested the
airplane might have gone down off
Mill Branch Road. However, an
aerial search of the area by a N.C.
Forcsi Service spotter plane and a
land check turned up no plane on
the ground or in the air.
At approximately 12:30 p.m.
Brunswick County Emergency Man
agement Coordinator canceled the
emergency response and called off
the search.
"We determined that it was just a
low-flying aircraft," he said over the
radio. Logan could not be rcachcd by
telephone Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to those units re
sponding, volunteers with Calabash
and .Sunset Beach VFDs were on
