Wood Ash Will Harm Centipede Gross Dear Plant Doctor: Will wood ashes from wood slovcs applied 10 centipede grass lawns in the winter help give the soil potash? Thank you. Answer: In general, wood ashes arc an excellent soil amendment. However, there are several things that you must remember before ap plying them to any soil. Wood ashes contain strong alkalies that will neu tralize acid soils. This is good for most vegetable and fruit crops, but terrible news for acid-loving plants like centipede grass, azaleas or blueberries. Do not apply wood ashes to your dormant centipede grass lawn. The change in soil acidity could poten tially cause serious permanent dam age to your centipede stand. Wood ashes contain from 1 percent to 10 percent potash and up to 1.5 percent phosphorus. The nutri ents in wood ashes will quickly leach away if exposed to rain, so keep ash es dry until you plan to use them. Avoid using ashes around germi nating seed, since new root growth may be injured. THE PLANT DOCTOR C. BRUCE _ f WILLIAMS Extension Area <?p y Turf Specialist Normally two to five pounds of wood ashes per l(X) square feel (side dressed or tilled in) of garden soil per growing season will help sweeten die soil and provide an ex cellent nutrient source. Do not use coal ash in your gar den. Some coal ash byproducts will severely inhibit plant growth. Perhaps the best use of wood ash es is on compost piles. The alkaline nature of the ashes and the high potash and phosphorus will help speed up the composition of organic matter. This process comes together to help produce compost quicker. Dear Plant Doctor: Your article of what to do about taking care of centipede grass was well received by me and informative. My problem is bahia grass and Johnson grass. Mow can I get rid of these weed pests before they take over my centipede grass and bcrmu da grass lawn. 1 sure would like some help on this. Answer: 'Hie first step is to posi tively identify the weed species that arc giving you the problem. Johnson grass (Sorghum halepcnsc) is a nox ious weed that typically is only a weed in heavy clay soils. Glyphos ate (Roundup) or scthoxydim (Poast) will kill Johnson grass and most other grasses. In a regularly mown lawn, 1 have never known Johnson grass to be a weed problem. Bahia grass (Paspalum notation) is another matter. Bahia grass can be eradicated as weed when grow ing in bermuda grass by using the arsonate herbicides such as MS MA, MAMA, DSMA or DMA or mct sulfuron (Scott's DMC). Several re peat applications may be required to achicvc good control. Do not use any of these herbi cides on ccntipcdc grass, carpet grass or St. Augustine grass. Controlling bahia grass in a ccn tipcdc grass lawn is a slightly more difficult problem. In an unfertilized lawn, ccntipcdc grass will normally be more competitive for nutrients dian bahia grass. Thus, over several years time, the ccntipcdc grass will force out the bahia grass. In other words, I know of no chemical means 1 can recommend that would help rid your centipede grass lawn of bahia grass. (Send your gardening questions to I he Plant Doctor, P.O. Box 109, Bolivia.
