Speaking to the Whiteville Rotary Club just prior to the start of presea son prep football drills. Aldridgc looked to West Brunswick as the team to beat in the WC this fall. Aldridgc also mentioned that South Brunswick and Hast Bladen will also be among the top league teams. Learning About Fire Ants The deluge of rain that hit the area during the past three weeks has re >ultcil in .i learning experience for West Brunswick football players in more than one way. Trojan head coach Marshall Seay reports that his players have learned a great deal about the many tire ants that can be found around the school's gridiron complex. It seems that the lire anLs have come out for air recently as the ground is saturated with water. With Trojan football pla\ers rolling and sloshing around on a wet field loaded with puddles of water, they are easy targets for the insects that carry a powerful bite and can leave welts that take a week to heal. "We had some of our kids jumping around out there Monday like they were on fire. Several had to stop practice momentarily to take their paints off in order to get at the ants that were biting them," laughed Seay. "It was quite a show." Leland Fisherman Leaves For World Event I?Y TERRY POPE When Leland's Jerry Mullins leaves for Europe ncxi week, he'll carry with him hopes of winning a gold medal. Mullins is one of five Americans who'll be fishing in the World Bank Fishing Championships in Szeged, Hungary. Sept. 1-2. Selected by the American Fishing Association (AFA), the United States team will compete against teams from 25 to 3D countries. "Over there, it's just like the Super Bowl here," said Mullins. "They have a big parade before the tournament." An estimated 20,(XX) to 50,000 people attend the annual event that is moved each year to a different host country. Mullins will leave Tuesday, Aug. 20, for the 16-day trip. The town of Lcland donated S3CX) for his trip last week. !n S/cged, he will be fishing for anything that's biting ? shiners, carp and other trash fish. Years of pollut cd waters and high-pressure fishing have made fish in Europe spooky and wary, he said. "They have practiced catch and release for over 30 years," said Mullins. "It's hard to llnd a fish over there." To compensate, Mullins plans to use a lightweight, graphite pole; one-pound test line and No. 16 hooks At the end of two days of tishing, the team that has caught the most tisli by total weight will win the event, regardless of the variety of fish. To Brunswick County residents, fishing may he a way to spend a lazy summer afternoon or a break from the stress caused by jobs or families. But pole fishing is a popu lar spectator sport in Europe, said Mullins. 'l"he World Bank Championships tend to bring out the European crowds to cheer on their national teams and to see first-hand the latest innovations in fishing gear. The first cvcnl was held in 1957. Mick Thill, captain of ihc American team, won a gold medal in Italy in 1982. The Chicago native has become a distributor of European style fishing gear in the United States. "I've known him for quite a while," said Mullins. "We have be come good friends." Mullins believes bank fishing can become popular in North Carolina. When tie returns from Hungary, he hopes to start an AHA club in Lcland with its main focus on teaching young kids how to fish. The clubs arc non-profit organiza tions with goals to teach angling tactics, water safety, conservation and education on water pollution. "It's already in the works," said Mullins. "1 anticipate it will be in full swing by the spring fishing sea son." The club will practice catch and release of all fish caught and prac tice on fresh water rivers and lakes. The club may do some salt water fishing later, he said. His dream is to organize clubs across the suite and to have a con test to choose a state winner. A problem for low-lying Brunswick County is that there are few banks where fishermen can actually stand to fish, he said. In the World Championship, each team is allowed a 15-yard section of shoreline from which to fish. It re sults in an intense and lough situa tion for the competitors, who must use and develop sensitive fishing gear, he said. Mullins grew up in Indiana and spent five years in Maine. When he moved to Florida in 1972, he began to take the sport of fishing seriously. He spent 13 years fishing the salt water of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway there before he and his wife, Karen, moved to Lcland in 1985. "It's just an honor to be chosen for the team," said Mullins. Leland Tops Stanley, Sardis In Dixie Majors Tourney Lcland remained alive in ihc N.C. Dixie Youth Baseball Majors Tournament (ages 11-12) in Hope Mills last Monday with a 10-2 win over Stanley in an elimination round contest. The local District V champions won two ol their tirst three ganvs in the championship tournament and were leading unbeaten Sardis 1 -0 in the bottom of the third inning later in the week before action was post poned due to rain. Lcland wcnl on to edge Sardis 7 6 with pitcher Tony Nelson getting the win. Shortstop Ray Caffce also had a solo homer for Lcland while Adam King had a double. Timmy Johnson and Adam Child also drove in one run each for ihc winners. Whiteville Optimist went on to win the tournament with a 5^4 edg ing of host Hope Mills.
