BY MARJOR1E MEGIVERN If fuzzy little Fido or your giant Great Dane is just like a family member, you still can't count on sharing your travel accommodations with this beloved pet. Despite last-minute legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly per mitting dogs in motel rooms, few propri etors will change their policies prohibiting canine visitors. Rep. Harry Payne (D-New Hanover) was urged by the state branch of the American Kennel Association to change the North Carolina law forbidding this practice. He and the organization felt that significant tourist dollars were lost as families avoided staying overnight in a state where Fido was not welcome. However, Brunswick County motel man agers were emphatic in their determination to continue discriminating against the bark ing. flea-laden mutts. Pam Creech, manager of Sunset Beach Motel was the most vehement of those sur veyed. Outraged is the word. "I don't have them and I won't have them. I don't care what the legislature says," she declared. She spoke from unpleasant experiences in the past, when people "snuck" dogs into their rooms and lied about it. "I heard bark ing late one night and went to the room," she related. "The man told me, 'You don't see a dog, do you?' and I could see the dog moving under the bedcovers. I turned him out right then, with no refund." Creech cited fleas as the biggest prob lem, noting that even if dogs arrive without them, they pick up sand fleas in this beach environment. "And you can spray and spray, but you can't get rid of them," she said. The new law, she feared, would cause travelers to be even angrier over motel poli cies in the area. "It's a ridiculous law from the health standpoint," she said. Like hers, other motels on the beach, have an edge in the dog prohibition because their beach access is limited. In Holden Beach, dogs are not allowed at all, said Carvin Robinson, manager of Gray Gull Motel there. "We don't allow dogs under any circumstances, unless they are secing cyc dogs," he said. "Our experience has been that, even family pets have some fleas and weeks later a terrible infestation ap pears and you have to fumigate." He admitted some visitors were "very upset" over his edict, which has always prohibited pets of all kinds. "We post a placard to that effect in every room, at the registration desk and it's in our brochures," Robinson explained. The Island Motel in Ocean Isle Beach has always had a "no pet" policy, too, ac cording to manager Nancy Barbee, and the new law won't change it. "It's not fair to other people to expose them to the fleas and the hair, especially if they have aller gies," she noted. She acknowledged that it's controversial. "Some people won't come to a vacation area unless they can bring their pets," she said. "I always give them the names of ken nels, but they often say they wouldn't leave their pet in a kennel." These were also the sentiments of Cathy McLaurin at The Winds in Ocean Isle Beach and Peggy Thompson at Calabash Motel. "1 don't think I lose much business because of this, because I stay full," Thompson said. Frank Morrison, manager of Shallotte's Twilight Motel retorud, "I'm sorry they passed that law," and said flatly that, "The policy is I don't want them. I don't want to discuss it." The Continental Motel manager at Sunset Beach was equally abrupt. "I've never allowed them and never will. The law makes no difference," said Randi Moon. Further from the beaches, in Bolivia's G & G Motel, Gayle Wescott replied with an emphatic "No!" when asked if dogs might be welcome there. "We've lost maybe two or three families because of this policy, but if people think so much of their pets, they should leave them in a kennel," she said.
