Camp Teaches Youths How To Conserve
Conservation and good gardening
practices have a great deal in com
mon. All of us owe thanks to the
forward thinking conservationists
that lobbied and worked to a-plant
our forests many years ago.
Good gardening practices arc
good conservation practices on a
smaller scale. As our population
grows, the importance of educating
our youth in conservation of re
sources becomes critical.
Composting, recycling and home
gardening are very much the con
servation efforts that face us in the
I^Xls. Much of this effort can be
accomplished in our own backyard.
1 learned about natural resources
conservation long before I was in
terested in gardening. For almost 50
years, the Virginia Federation of
Garden Clubs has helped to finan
cially sponsor a very special and
unique kind of summer camp for
young people called Nature Camp.
Nature Camp is a non-profit or
ganization dedicated to educating
youth about natural science and
conservation. The camp is located
in Thomas Jefferson National Forest
at the southern end of the
Shenandoah Valley near the village
of Vesuvius. Va.
I attended many different summer
camps in my youth, but none was
like Nature Camp. Back in the
IVftOs. campers attended lectures,
took field trips, learned about in
sects. trees, flowers, snakes, sala
manders and the universe. 1 learned
the basics of how to use a com
pound microscope and hand lens,
the proper way to catch a snake,
how to construct a plant press (and
identify plants), the correct method
of insect preservation (and idenuli

cation) and gained a great apprecia
tion for the great outdoors.
In addition, as a camper 1 had to
complete a notebook and a research
project. Living conditions were
Spartan but adequate.
After a 28-year absence Irom
Nature Camp. 1 returned for an ecol
ogy workshop sponsored by the
Nature Camp Alumni Association.
The rosier of "old" campers includ
ed artists, musicians, teachers, attor
neys, business owners and profes
sionals from universities, corpora
tions and environmental agencies
from Maine to South Carolina.
A highly diverse group had been
assembled w ith the common interest
of learning more about the conser
vation of our natural resources. The
days began at 5:30 a.m. with a bird
walk with Dr Steve Fretwell and
ended at 1 1 p.m. with observations
of the Perseid meteor shower with
astronomer Terry Richardson.
Classes, workshops, field trips and
lots of discussions were crammed
into the daylight hours.
Dr. Jack Reeves (also known as
Colonel) has been the director of
Nature Camp for the last 20 years. I
know of no finer individual to pre
serve the spirit and intern of the
founders. As the retired biology de
partment head at Virginia Military
Institute, Reeves ensures that the
mam theme of Nature Camp contin
ues to be conservation of natural re
sources. He has been recognized na
tionally and regionally lor his pro
fessional conservation efforts.
Young people are applying lor
admission to the two-week camp in
record numbers. Camp counselors
and instructors are some of the
finest people on the East Coast.
University faculty, graduate and un
dergraduate students and other pro
fessionals make up one of the most
diverse and unique group of instruc
tors to be found at a summer cainp
anywhere.
The Conservation Pledge was
written well over 60 years ago.
Known to all conservationists and
former campers. I believe its mes
sage to be as important today as it
was many years ago.
It states. "I give my pledge as an
American to save and faithfully to
defend from waste, the natural re
sources of my country: its soil, air,
minerals, its forests, waters and
wildlife."
Gardening helps create a great
appreciation for the plants and ani
mals in our environment. Conser
vation helps preserve it for future
generations.
Please write to let me know of
any efforts you may be familiar
with to educate our youth in the
conservation of natural resources in
North Carolina.
