Charity Ball To Feature The Dick Goodwin Big Band The versatile Dick Goodwin Big Band will entertain at the third an nual Charily Ball Sept. 27 at the Jones-Byrd Clubhouse and Convention Center at Sea Trail Plantation. The 12-memher group, based in Columbia, SC., consists of 10 in strumentalists and two vocalists, Margie Miles and Jell Wyatt. Their repertoire includes traditional big band numbers such as In the Mood and String of I' earls as well as cur rent hit tunes, '50s and beach mu sic, "party animal" favorites and special dance music. Dick Goodwin, leader and ar ranger, is a professor at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches music composition and writes the music for the marching band's half time shows. He is also well-known as a performer, travel ing to Latin America and to Germany with the Dick Goodwin Jazz Quintet. The Dick Goodwin Big Hand lias performed at major social events in the Carolinas. Georgia and Virginia. Founded by Cindy Langston of Shallotte. die formal, black-tic affair benefits the Prescription for Excellence Foundation, a United Way grantee. The non-profit organization's pri mary goal is to encourage personal excellence in Brunswick County. Its means include providng Pathways to Excellence tapes for use in the Brunswick County Schools to moti vate and instruct; providing scholar ships to Brunswick Community College and encouraging industrial development in Brunswick County. Pathways to Excellence, created by Louis Ticc of The Pacific Institute, is an 18-tape video pro gram for young people who are fac ing the challenges of education and future career choices. In previous years the program has been used ;ii ihc sixth ami ninth grade levels. Ihis year l)ie schools will use it with the In-School Suspension pro gram and for stall development. Proceeds of the 1989 Charily Ball provided one set of IX videos to the schools and 675 student workbooks. The 1990 ball provided, with the help of ToBeC'o and the Community Based Alternatives program, S5,(K)C) to endow the W.A. Stanley scholar ship endowment at BCC, another set of videotapes for the schools and another 675 workbooks. Fundraising goals for 1991 in clude a third and last set of video tapes for the public schools, more workbooks and another scholarship endowment through the BCC Foundation. Tickets to the ball are SI(X) per person or S2(X) per couplc. Invitations have been sent; more in formation is available from Dr. Lee Langston and Cindy Langston. CLUB BRIEFS Christian Women's Club To Meet "Pretty As A Picture" is the theme for the North Myrtle Beach Christian Women's Club buffet Thursday, Sept. 19, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Surf Club, 1701 Springland Lane, North Myrtle Beach. Cost is S8.50. The program will include a demonstration, ducts by Pat and A1 Hatcher and a talk by Judy Earnhardt of Greensboro. DAR Officers To Visit The fall district lour of state offi cers and chairmen of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution of North Carolina, in cludes a Sept. 16 visit with District 9 at the Hilton Hotel in Wilmington. Regents of the dis trict's 16 chapters, including William Cause in Shallottc and Brunswick Town in Southport, will receive instructions for the year and Spencer Family Hold Reunion The family of John Price Spencer will hold its annual reunion Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Southport Community Building. All persons relating to, or de scending from, John Price Spencer are requested to bring an item for the covered-dish dinner. A social hour will begin at noon for members to share pictures and other family relics.
