LOOKING FOR 100TH P,RID WIM Trojans Visit Cougars In Early Intercounty Contest BY JOHNNY CRAIG Fresh off an impressive 38-0 rump over North Myrtle Beach, S.C., last week, the West Brunswick Trojans continue nonconference play Friday visiting South Bruns wick in the first of two matchups with the Cougars this season. The game will be the season opener for South Brunswick. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Cougars (6-5 last year) made their final preparations for the 1991 season last Friday in a 20-10 scrim mage loss to visiting Tabor City (sec related story this section). Prior to battling the Red Devils. South Brunswick fell to 4-A foe Wdmington Hoggard 20-7 two weeks ago in the United Carolina Bank Jamboree Starting quarterback Todd Vice missed the jamboree scrimmage due to a leg injury and was replaced by reserve Kevin Smith. Terry Galloway set up the only South Brunswick score on a 46-yard run up the middle. West Brunswick (1-0) extended its school record for consecutive season-opening wins to five straight with last week's triumph over North Myrtle Beach. The Trojans haven't dropped a season opener since 1986 in a 19-14 loss to Pender. South Brunswick has had only re cent succcss with season-opening games having won the last two against Hallsboro, 35-6 last year and 60-8 in 19X9. Prior to the wins over the Tigers, South Brunswick had not opened the season successfully since the 1970s. Friday's game gives the Trojans a chance to reach a special school milestone. A West Brunswick win would be the Trojans KXHh football victory in the school's history. The Trojans have compiled a 99-99-1 football record since the school opened in 1972. ***** Vice returns to be the likely of fensive leader for the Cougars. The senior passed for over 1,300 yards in 1990 and will have a trio of top receivers to throw to this time around led by Keith Marlowe (5 foot-U, 170 pounds). Marlowe made five receptions against Tabor City for 1 15 yards. Other Cougar receivers include tight end Marcus Smith (6-4, 225) and senior split end Butch Fullwood (6-2, 175). Rounding out the Cougar offen sive backfield will be senior tail back Vinnic Joyner and junior Corey Brown and Galloway, a soph omore fullback. Other South Brunswick players include wide receivers Santino Mc Glaughin and Jason Griffin; quarter back Jeff Simon; tailbacks Valen tino Bryant and Martin Ray; tight ends Danny Shannon and Will Rabon; fullbacks Matt Lennon and Mike Clewis; centers Jerry Gall oway. Allen F.llixson, John Walls, Joey Walls and Keith Burke; guards Rodney Willoughby, Mike Ran dolph, Tcrrancc Randolph and Willie Swain; tackles Jimmy Simon. Charles Blue. Oscar Robertson. Probable defensive starters in clude linemen Wayne Branch, Bob by Lovcttc, Caison, Warren, and Lonnie Mitchell. Linebackers in clude Russ, Shawn Stevenson and Aaron Butler while secondary starters will likely be Jim Cirissclt, Jerry Reeves and Bo/eman. Russ and Mitchell combined to sack North Myrtle Beach quarter back Matthew Palmer lor a safety in the first half of last week's game while Grissett intercepted a lirst quarter pass and Ronnie Bradley and Branch both recovered Chief fumbles. ***** The 20-gamc series between West and South Brunswick is cur rently deadlocked at 10-10. South Brunswick took a 21-14 win last year in the final week of die regular season. The victory sent the Cougars into the state playoffs for the first time since 1986 while ending the Trojans' hopes of a school-record three straight postsea son berths. The South Brunswick win also snapped a two-game losing streak to the Trojans as West had won the previous pair of games, 22-20 (dou ble overtime) in 1989 and 49-6 in 1988. The 1991 season marks only the sccond lime that the Trojans and Cougars will meet twice in the same year. The pair have traditionally met once in the final week of the prep regular season since the formation of the Waccamaw Conference in 19X5. However, the two schools met twice on the gridiron in 1973 in the hrst Unn bail games between the pair. The two split the contests with West Brunswick winning the first game, 13-0 before South rebounded to win 7-6 in the final meeting. West Brunswick blanked the Cougars in won both 1973 games, 14-0 in the first contest and 36-0 in the sccond. Alter the twin decisions in 1973, West Brunswick reeled off five straight wins over the Cougars in cluding the biggest romp by either team in the series, 54-6 in 1975. South Brunswick responded by winning the next three games dur ing 1977-79 before the Trojans blanked the Cougars in back-to back games the next two years, 9-0 and 25-0. South Brunswick won five of the six games played during 1982-87 including a 40-22 romp in 1986 during the Cougars' Waccamaw Conference championship season. The league tide won by the Cougars is the only one in school grid histo STAFF PMOIO BY JOHNNY CRAJC New Facilities The sign over the press box in the West Brunswick stands proclaiming the new "M.H.
