Thieves Torch Stolen Truck Near Navassa

A pickup truck stolen from
Carolina Bcach over the weekend
was found near Navassa Sunday.
It had been destroyed by fire, re
ported Brunswick County Sheriff's
Deputy Pete Moore.
Deputies found the vehicle park
ed in a wooded area about two
miles from the Navassa boat ramp
along Davis Creek. 'Die truck was a
total loss.
The owner, Danny Ray Kelly, of
Dare Street, Wilmington, had re
ported the truck stolen to the Caro
lina Beach Police Department the
previous day.
An investigation is continuing,
Moore reported.

Shallotte man accused of stealing a

at Seaside, reported Deputy William
Hewett. The owner said he left the
suspect in the car while he entered
the Seaside Minute Man store, but
the car was gone when he returned.
A warrant has been issued for unau
thorized use ol a conveyance
against the suspect.

hicle parked at Seaside Monday, re
ported Caison. Someone removed a
fire extinguisher from a boat and

Development Grant
Awarded To South port
Soulhport has been awarded a
half-million dollar grant to rehabili
tate dwellings and install flood and
drainage lines.
The S555.131 Community Devel
opment Block Grant will help fund
repairs to 29 structures and con
struct 3.350 feet of flood and drain
age line in the Lord and Rhctt
streets area.
Southport will contribute S79.350
in local funds for the rehabilitation
activities, according to a news re
lease from the N.C. Department of
Economic and Community Devel
opment.
The Brunswick County city is
one of 45 municipal governments
and 14 counties in North Carolina
that were awarded more than S29
million in community development
grants this year.
Local governments will use the
money to rehabilitate sub-standard
housing, improve water and sewer
services to households and finance
other revitali/ation activities in low
and moderate- income neighbor
hoods.
The N.C. Division of Community
Assistance, which administers the
federal grant program, received re
quests for community revitali/ation
funds from 105 applicants this year.
Grants are awarded on a competi
tive basis. Local governments must
meet minimum eligibility require
ments and show how projects will
benefit low- and moderate-income
persons.
