Laywoman Training For Chaplaincy
Dorothy Harris, a charter member
of the Seaside United Methodist
Church in Ocean Isle, is a member
of the first clinical pastoral educa
tion class at New Hanover Medical
Center in Wilmington.
She began the 1 6- week course
Sept. 3.
l"hc students spend two days a
week in the hospital attending class
es, counseling patients and families,
and discussing their experiences.
They will also uike turns serving as
chaplain on call nights and week
ends.
"Our objective is to help our stu
dents integrate their knowledge of
people, religious faith and experi
ence into effective pastoral care,"
said the Rev. Dim Ledbelter, pro
gram supervisor.
Most who lake the course arc al
ready engaged in a professional
ministry, but the program is open to
"qualified laypersons," he said.
Mrs. Harris is a retired nurse who
is preparing herself to be a lay visi
tor and to be a volunteer hospital
chaplain.
"I want to share the strength I
have with people and leant from

them," she said.
Lcdbctter, a certified CPE super
visor, has been one ot the chaplains
at New Hanover Regional since last
year, and developing the new pro
gram was his first assignment.
Applications are being accepted
for a class of 'u!! time students who
will begin their coursework June X,
1992, and work and study at the
hospital five days a week through
Aug. 21. 1992.

Itinerant bishop Francis Asbury
preached there in February 1791,
while a church building has stood at
the site for more than 200 years.
Singing, preaching, games, a mil
itary encampment, crafts demon
strations and historical exhibits,
contests and other activities arc
planned, with some church families
planning to camp overnight on the
church grounds.
According to a tentative sched
ule, activities will begin Friday at
6:30 p.m. and conclude with infor
mal, "revival" worship inside the
sanctuary Sunday, Oct. 6, with par
ticipants encouraged to wear period
costumes or casual dress.

Scat Pleasant, Md., will preach the
revival scrvicc each day at 7:45
p.m. Sept. 23-27 at Ml. Zion Baptist
Church of Longwood.

McCall was bom in London,
W.Va., on Oct. 11, 1916, the son of

Navy veteran.
