SPORTING SCENE Trends Indicate 3-Team Conference Race Possible BY JOHNNY I RAK; While most area prep football teams are only two games into the cur rent season, the Waeeainaw 2-A Conference is already seeing a gradual separation nh three teams occupying the league's upper division. West Brunswick. Last Bladen and Whiteville, the trio picked by most to battle for the conference title and to grab three of the league's four state playoff berths, have been impressive early. Defense is supposed to dominate the \VC this season. It couldn't be any more evident than with the big three in the campaign's early games. West Brunswick and f-ast Bladen have yielded only seven points each in us first two games. The Trojans have outscored their opponents 72-7 while Hast Bladen has been equally strong with a %-7 advantage in two outings. Whilcvillc lias also outscorcd its opponents by an impressive 67-0 mar gin. Among Whilcvillc 's victims was defending stale 2-A champion Clinton, a 12-0 loser to the Wollpack in the first week ol l^c season. Hast Bladen will get its toughest test to date Friday when the Cougars visit Clinton. The Dark Horses rebounded from their loss to Whilcvillc with a 30-0 whipping of league member West Columbus and hope to make it 2 for-3 going against the Cougars. After the big three. South Brunswick looks to be the best bet to fill out the upper-half o! the league. The Cougars are 1-1 but head coach Bill Hewett hasn't been overjoyed by his team's early performances. South Brunswick dropped a 34-7 loss to West Brunswick in its opener but last Friday's 22-0 blanking of Acmc-Dclco should help the Cougars' confidence. Once the league season begins next Friday, scheduling should help South Brunswick to remain near the top of the loop until at least the final two weeks. The Cougars kick off the WC season at East Bladen next week but will then face North Brunswick, West Columbus, South Robeson and Fairmont during four consecutive weeks. South Brunswick will likely be 4-1 in the WC before closing out its season against Whilcvillc ami West Brunswick. North Brunswick coach Gary Baldwin was disappointed by his team's performance in last Friday's 34-8 loss to Dixon. The Scorpions opened the season with an impressive 26-0 shutout over Topsail but was just short of awful against Dixon. Baldwin blasted his team lor its lack of intensity following Friday's game. The Scorpions (1-1 ) will get a chance to go over the .5(H) mark tins week w hen they visit Lejeune in their final nonconference tilt. Three league teams are still looking for their first win of the season West Columbus, South Robeson and Fairmont. It's hard to imagine South Robeson taking such a nose dive from its Waccanuiw Conference championship season from last year. The Mustangs were 6-1 in the league in 1990 (sharing the title with Whilcvillc) ami H-3 overall. South Robeson is not only 0-2 thus far in 1991, but have only scored seven points in losses to Red Springs and Puniell Swell. Fairmont's 0 2 start could make for a long gridiron season in Robeson County for the two WC members. The Golden Tornadoes have lost their first two by a combined 1 1 points to Bladcnboro (24-20) and St. Pauls (21-14). Things don't get any easier for Fairmont this week when the Tornadoes host 4-A Lumberton. Vice throw lor two touchdowns ami Ute Cougar de Tense recorded its lirsi shuiout in seven games as Smith Brunswick got its lirst win ot the prep season, 22-0. over visiting Acine-l )clco. Vice, a ft-loot I, IKO-pound se nior. threw to Keith Marlowe lor a 30 -yard scoring toss with 4:55 to play in the lirst quarter and to Marcus Smith lor an I I -yard touch down strike with 11:55 let t in the lirst hall to lilt the Cougars to an early 14-0 lead. following Marlowe's touehdown, Acme-Delco controlled the hall lor 14 plays hut the Cougars got excel lent field position returning a Trojan punt to the 37-yard line. Vice ran three straight plays and a Trojan 15-yard penalty took the Cougars to the Acme-Delco 11 yard line. Vice then rolled to his lei t on a bootleg play connecting w ith Smith for the Cougars' second touchdow n. Gary Nowell added the extra point following both scores. South Brunswick took advantage of a Trojan fumble just before half time for its final touchdown of the game. Thomas Blue picked up an Acme-Delco fumble at the Cougar 24-yard line and ran 71 yards for the score with 1:37 left in the half. The extra-point attempt failed but the Cougars held a commanding 20 0 lead at the break. Acme-Delco hail driven to the South Brunswick 24-yard line at the time of the miscuc alter a six-yard gain on first down. The South Brunswick defense turned in the only Cougar points in the second hall when Acme-Delco junior quarterback Michael Really was tackled in the end /one with X:57 left in the game. The South Brunswick offense dominated play in the second half running 30 plays compared to Acme Delco 's 12. However, two Cougar offensive drives fell short at the Trojan eight and three-yard lines. "We've got to get improvement," said South Brunswick head coach Rill llewett, referring to his team's offensive line. "We've got to get the ball in ihe end zone when n gels "gin check' tune." "We are lacking the killer in stinct. We're not executing lutula mcutals like we should. We have got some work ahead of us hut, at the same lime, we have some young jvople," added llewett. "I am a little disappointed tonight because we have raised our stan dards lor this season. We are not ready to gel there yet, hut we gained a little tonight." llewett was also impressed with a large Acme-Dclco offensive front line. "Acnte-Delco matches up well with the Wallace-Rose Hill team we face this week (Friday). Wallace Rose Hill will also have similar size and speed." Even though the Trojans dropped to 0-2 (alter losing their opener 3X 0 two weeks ago to Midway), head coach Robert Fuller was proud of his team. "I can't ask our players to do any better than they did tonight," said Fuller. "South Brunswick has a well-coached ball club. Both teams seem to match up well." South Brunswick (1-1) travels to Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest, the Cougars' fi nal nonconfercnce tunc up. Acme-Dclco (0-2) has an open date.
