The endowed scholarship pro
vides a one-year cash award to be
used toward tuition, fees, and books
at BCC by the recipient.

boost its child protective services
State and federal funds are
trickling down to local counties in
an effort to combat an increase in
reported child abuse and neglect.

Jamie Orrock plans to hire ait addi
tional child services worker, il
Brunswick County Commissioners

"There will be no county money
involved," said Orrock.
The department received $38,166
in July and will gel another $24,737
in January, Orrock said. Another es
timated $24,000 will be allocated
every six months thereafter.
"II the rate of complaints stay con
sistent," said Orrock, "we will gel the
same amount of money again."
The grant is p;irt of $3.2 million
set aside by the suite to combat an
increase in reported child abuse and
neglcct eases under investigation by
county social services units.
State legislators set aside the first
such allocations in 19X9, said
Orruck. Public awareness of the
growing number ol child abuse and
fatality cases have kept funds in the
Brunswick County social workers
