Varna mtow Third Birthd n Throws ay Parly BY l)()li(; Ki l l KR Varnamiown residents celebrated their town's third birthday Saturday by tugging ropes, pitching horse shoes anil eating more than 2(H) pounds ol fried fish. "1 thought it went great," Mayor Judy Galloway said of the third an nual festival. "There was somebody there piddling around all day." Mold to commemorate the found ing ol the town in I9XH. the festival opened with a ribbon-cutting at the (own hall. Varnamiown Aldermen bought the one-story brick house oil Vamamlown Road a year ago and renovated it so it could function as a town hall. Following the dedication, Amer ican and North Carolina llags were raised on a new Hag pole in the front yard. A half doz.cn crafts booths and a hot dog stand tilled one side of the lawn. Inside the town hall hung five anti litter |X>siers, which had earned blue ribbons for five Varnamiown youngsters. Winners were Willie Vainam, Jessica Futch, Jesse C'audill, Cerela Varnain anil Hric C'audill, who wrote a rap song about litter featur ing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Volunteer cooks fired up their fryers just before noon and had sold about 210 |x>unds of llsh by early afternoon. Plans for a fish dinner Saturday night were canceled be cause the fish plates were sold out. Herbert "Midget" Varnuin, a life long resident of Varnamiown, was given a plaque Saturday honoring his 1 5 years of service to the com munity. Varnuin, a member of Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1976, helps care for the elderly m the community by checking then blood pressure and hearts. Afternoon activities attracted the younger generation to the town hall grounds, as scores of people turned out to pitch horseshoes and competc in the tug-of-war. "There was a lot of people there to see all that," Mrs. Galloway said. "There were cars lined up and down the road." The mayor's team won die worn en's tug of- war, defeating last year 's champ "Doug's Angels." Sue Galloway's team was victorious m llie men's division, beating Trevor McDonald's squad. Mayor Galloway said the Vamaintown Women's Club, which sponsors the annual festival, plans lo put the parade hack in next year s schedule of events.
