The Brunswick County Volunteer
and Information Center is seeking
support and volunteers for two up
coming Christmas programs de
signed to benefit needy families.
One program. Tree of Hope, al
lows sponsorship of gifts for indi
vidual children, while the other.
Adopt- A-Family, handles "adop
tion" of an entire family for Chris
tmas.
Pete Bamette, executive director,
said applications are being accepted
through Nov. 15 from businesses,
churches and individuals who wish
to sponsor a Tree of Hope. A news
release indicated that planning
deadlines will be "very light" for
the distribution of the trees, their
name tags and gifts.

Halloween Carnival Slated
At N.C. Festival By Sea
A tradition continues Oct. 25
with the N.C. Festival By The Sea
Halloween Carnival at Holdcn
Beach.
As in recent years, the event will
feature a costume contest for all
ages, carnival games for youngsters
and a haunted house. Holdogs, soft
drink* and other snacks will be
available and door prize drawings
are planned.
Registration for the costume eon
test begins at 6 p.m. at the carnival
site, Tri-Beach Volunteer Fire De
partment on Sabbath Home Road
near Holdcn Beach, with judging at
6:30 p.m.
Games and the haunted house
will continue until 10 p.m., said
Brenda Strickland, who is co-chair
ing the event with Dave Deaver.
Carnival game tickets are 25
cents each and admission to the
haunted house is SI.
Costumes will he judged and
prizes awarded for first, second and
third place in seven age divisions:
hirth through IS months; 19
months- 3 years; 4-6; 7-10; 11-13;
14-16; and 17 and older.
Proceeds of this and other festi
val activities go to the Greater llol
den Beach Merchants Association,
which uses the money to support
the local fire and rescue units, beau
tificauon and travel and tourism
promotion.

ment Auxiliary will hold a yard sale
and a chicken and ham dinner sale
Saturday, Oct. 26, at the fire station.

Families Can Apply To VIC
For Christmas Gift Baskets
The Volunteer and Information
Center (VIC) is accepting applica
tions for Christmas baskets now
through Nov. 15.
Pete Bamclle, executive director
of VIC, said baskets of gifts arc
available to eligible Brunswick
County families who apply by the
deadline at the VIC office at Supply
between 10 a.m. x?nd 4 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.
Barncttc said some eligibility re
quirements must be met. Applic
ation must be made in person; ap
plicants must meet income stan
dards or have a current emergency
situation; identification and Social
Security numbers must be provided
for every member of each house
hold except infants under one year
old; families rr.u::' reside in
Brunswick County; and applicants
arc not eligible if support is being
donated from another organization.
"Last year," said VIC Chairman
Randy Kecsee, "we were able to
make Christmas happier for over
430 families. This year, though we
regret the factors causing it, we ex
pect nearly double that number."
As a result, said Angela Fisher,
executive assistant, the program
needs an even larger number of vol
unteers and persons willing to do
nate to the program than in past
years.
The VIC office is loeated at the
junction of U.S. 17 and N.C. 21 1 in
Supply, beside Supply Baptist
Church. Interested volunteers or
persons wishing to make donations
