Annual Oyster Festival Races Draw Record 57
Runners
Sunny skies anil a mild temperature drew 57 run
ners to the N.C. Oyster Festival road races Saturday
morning at Holden Beach, one of the best showings in
reccnt years.
Danny West and Debra Caviness, both of Myrtle
Beach. S.C., were the top male and female finishers in
both the one-mile and the five-kilometer races.
West posted winning times of 5:08 in the mile and
16:41 in the 5K. Ms. Caviness ran the mile in 5:43 and
finished the 5K in 1^:04 .

Top finishers in the l()-kilomeier race were John
Poisson of Wilmington with a lime til 34:50 and Cathy
Molnar ol Myrtle Beach with a time of 5t):lK>.
Runners-up in the men's one-mile run were Milton
Ganyard of Raleigh. ('. H. Marts Jr. and F.nc Yow, both
of Wilmington. Natalie West ol Myrtle Beach was sec
ond in the female division.
The second- through fourth-place finishers, respec
tively. in the men's sK were Mike iJevlin ol North
Myrtle Beach, Robert Morrison ol Cireenville and
Winfrcd Gore of Wilmington. Female runners-up in the
5K were Danielle Fredrick of Gary, Tamii Wensil of
Concord and Cyndy Gross of Charlotte.
Age group winners were Natalie West, Myrtle
Beach. 13-19; Shcrri Leazer, Charlotte, and Jeff Willett,
Ashehoro, 20-29; Konni Taylor, Castle Hayne, and Jay
Leazer, Charlotte, 30-39; Milton Ganyard, Raleigh, 40
49; and C.H. Harts Jr.. Wilmington, 50-59.
Other top finishers in the 10-K among the males
were Cesar Arreguin of Greenville, Keith McCarthy of
Wilmington and Steve Wilson of Garland.
Female runncrs-up were Marilyn Boehm of Holdcn
Beach, Sue Griffith of Wilmington and Lynn
Hcnsclman of Fayctteville.
Age group winners were Shawn McKee, Carolina
Beach, 12 and under; Ann Chapoton, Raleigh, and
Jackey Watkins, Midway Park, 20-29; Sidney Johnson.

Voting On Homecoming Queen Part Of
Spirit Week At West
Candidates Tor 1991 Homecoming
Queen have been announced at West
Brunswick High School in Shallotte.
Kelly Frink, faculty organizer of
Homecoming activities, said students will
vote this week to sclect one of 14 coeds as
Homecoming queen. Other candidates will
serve as her court.
The winner will be crowned during
half-time festivities of the Homecoming
football game when the school takes on
North Brunswick High School Friday at
7:30 p.m. at Rourk Stadium.

BCC Off And Running
With Co-Ed Volleyball

Brunswick Community College has expanded further into intercolle
giate athletics this season by fielding the school's first volleyball leant.
The 12-member co-ed team is participaung in the Eastern Carolina
Community College Athletic Conference and competing against league
members with established net squads.
However, the BCC team has achieved marked success in its first sea
son boasting a 3-7 overall record as the campaign hits the home stretch.
In its most recent outing, Brunswick swept Edgecombe Community
College 15-7, 15-5 while dropping a 15-0, 15-0 decision to Lenoir
Community College.
"We believe we have been pretty competitive for a first-year team,"
said BCC coach Joe Morcland. "The rest of the conference has been field
ing volleyball teams for a minimum ol two years and some as long as 10
years."
"AH the other athletic officials I've talked with in the conference feel
like we have done very well for the first yea/."
Ten league members participate in volleyball including Bladen, Cape
Fear, Carteret, Coastal Carolina, Edgecombe, Lenoir, Pitt, Sandhills and
Wayne community colleges.
BCC visits Pitt Community College today (Thursday) in a three-team
match with Coastal Carolina.
The local squad will play its final home match Monday, Oct. 28, at
Shallotte Middle School beginning at 6 p.m. hosting Cape Fear and Wayne
Community Colleges.
Leading the team is Catawba College transfer Tracy Moore who is the
squad's most outstanding player and captain.
Rounding out the starting lineup are Brad Thomas, John Bean,
Catherine Lylcs, Su/anne Chutlc, Jenean Norris. Tim Lombardi and Jeremy
Vorowski.
Other team members include Heather Willard, Luke Hunt, Robin
Walcott and Debra Lanier.
BCC will conclude its season Oct. 30 participating in the conference
tournament held at Lenoir Community College in Kinston.
Brunswick hopes to continue to expand more into intercollegiate ath
letics next year with a tennis that will begin play in the spring or lall
according to Morcland.
"Approximately half the conference already participates in tennis and
most have golf teams as well."
Thanks To Oyster Run Volunteers
Some 62 runners participated in last Saturday's Oyster Festival Road
Race at Holdcn Beach in the second largest field ever for the annual event.
Ideal weather conditions, along with a host ol volunteers, helped make
this year's run perhaps the best ever.

On Monday, students were urged to

Tuesday featured a peck into the the year

for those who wish to imitate their favorite
tourist; Thursday (today) will feature Boot
Day, allowing students to help the WBHS
Trojans "stomp" the North Brunswick
Scorpions; and Friday will end the week
with Trojan Spirit Day, when students will
he asked to wear clothing in the school col
ors, green and white.
A pep rally and bonfire will be held this
evening (Thursday) at 7 p.m. near the foot
ball field.
Sale of spirit chains for each class as
well as door decorations arc also part of the
week-long festivities.
West Brunswick Clinches Share Of Conference Volleyball Title
