Some blcachcr seating will be available this year, he added. In the past, some elderly people have ex pressed an interest in going to the dance but chosc not to because of a lack of scaling. Food booths will also be open while the band is playing, said Michaels, who is host and emcce for the concert. Kites Will Fly At Festival Kite flying's popular along the beach all year long, but will take a competitive turn at the 1991 N.C. Festival By The Sea. People interested in taking part in the kite flying event arc to meet at the band stand under the Holden Beach Bridge at 2 p.m. Saturday, said Gay Atkins, festival coordinator. John Knight will conduct the event, with rules to be deter mined based on the number and types of kites. There is no entry fee. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places, and for the most original and artistic kites. Flyers with stunt kites and other specialty kites arc wel come, Ms. Atkins said. Kite Hying, said Ms. Atkins, seems to be one of the "big things" that both renters and homeowners enjoy when at the bcach. Sand Sculpting For Kids At Heart If you've ever been told you're too old to be building sand cas tles or creating sea creatures on the beach, then the N.C. Festival By The Sea has something for you. Kids and older folks who are still kids at heart are invited to compete in the annual sand sculpting contest, set for Saturday at 3 p.m. The strand at Campground By The Sea near the western end of Holden Beach will once again be the site of the contest, which usually draws a large number of sculptors and on-lookers. Rules for this year's event will be the same as last year, according to coordinator William Williamson. Originality, neatness, thorough ness, imaginativeness, distinguish ing characteristics and creativity arc the keys to winning the contest. There is no entry fee. Awards will be presented for the top three places in each age group, which will be set after all contestants are registered. Larry Fa/enbaker of Akron, Ohio, who usually plans his vaca tion around the festival, stole the show last year with a sea turtle that earned first-place honors in the adult division. Sculptors can use shovels, rakes and buckets to create their works of art, but molds are not allowed.
