He came out on top in a field of 30 competitors in the singles event, but lost the men's doubles tide he had won in 1988 and 1989. The men's doubles was won by the team of Eddie Swcatt of Holdcn Beach and Shcrrill Harris of Winston-Salem. They defeated Bur ton and his partner, George Bradshaw of Holdcn Beach, from a field of 23 teams. In the women's singles, Sue West of Sanford will seek her fourth straight title. The women's doubles was won by Shirley Driver of Supply and Elneda Holden of Shell Point. Men will play on three horseshoe courts and women on a fourth court for Saturday's matches, said Tonk ing. "It looks like it's go ing to be another hot contest." Some people practice year-round for a chance to be in the winner's circle, he said. Usually, the contest attracts a mixture of vacationers or property owners and local folks who want to try their hand at horse shoe pitching, said Tonking. "I'd say it's about 50-50," he said. "A lot of locals that work on the beach enters the contest each year. I guess a lot of people pitch horseshoes in this area for fun." All games, men's and women's, will be played with regulation horseshoes. Tonking heads a judge's panel that rules in tight situations. The doubles competition will be gin at 1 p.m. followed by the singles competition. The matches have grown by about 20 contestants each year, said Tonking. "It gets bigger every year," he said.
