Kids Learn About Disabilities Filth grade students at Bolivia Elementary School recently learned what it's like to he disabled while trying to function in a non-disabled world. Thommi Arnold, publicity coor dinator for the school, said that tcachcrs Retha Rusk, Lcvada Holmes and Sheila Wixxlall intro duced the idea to their students in the form of a game, selecting a vari ety of disabilities for different groups of children. Some of the students wore rub berbands around their wrists and fingers to simulate the feeling of arthritis, while another group of stu dents placed cottonballs in their cars to experience hearing impairment. Other children were selected to use walkers or wheelchairs. Ms. Arnold said that at the close ol a morning of experimentation, stu dents were assigned to write about the games in the journals they keep at school during the academic year. She said that the filth graders agreed that, despite the variety ol disablitics, they all had more diffi culty doing common tasks which they usually take for granted. One student wrote that he would never laugh at or make fun of a disabled person again. The exercise was part of the school curriculum lor the students' health and literature class, s. said Ms. Arnold. Good Water...
