Franks w as born in Leland on Jan. 14. 1933. the son of the late Eric and Elizabeth Nelson Franks. He was an elder of the Chua h of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints and had re tired from General Electric. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. Surviving are his wife, Mary C. Franks of the home: a daughter, Dcbra Franks Coston of Leland; a son Paul Henry Franks of Burgaw; two sisters, Grace Harkcr and Lucille Gregory, both of Wilmington; and seven grandchil dren. ROBERT FRANKLIN GANTT Robert Franklin Gantt, 63, of Wilmington died Nov. 13 at his resi dence. A graveside scrvicc was held Nov. 19 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Wilmington, with the Rev. Horace H. Hilton officiating. Gantt was bom in Pleasant Gardens on March 27, 1928. the son ol the late Johnnie Cicero and Luclla Underwood Gantt. He served in the 13th Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) of the U.S. Army's 187th Division during the Korean conflict. Gantt worked as a finishing carpen ter and was a resident of New Hanover County for more than 50 years. Surviving arc his wife, Mildred Robin Ondrasky Gantt of 25 years; bis son, Larry F. "Lair" Ganni; a brother, Johnnie b. Gantt Sr. of Brunswick County; and a sister, Dorothy Ballard of Lincoln County. THOMAS WAYNE CARUTHERS Thomas Wayne Caruthers, 29, of Lcland died Nov. 17 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Brunswick County. The funeral was held Nov. 19 in the Coble Ward-Smith Chapel, Wilmington, with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating. Another scrvicc and burial were to take place in Wentzvillc, Mo. Caruthers was bom Oct. 10, 1962, in Bedford, Mo., the son of Gracc C. Caruthers of Bay City, Texas, and the late Roger Carulhers. He was a member of the Leland Volunlcer Rescue Squad. Surviving in addition lo his moth er are his wile, lummy Carulhers of the home; two sons, Jeremy Carulhers ami Joshua Carulhers, both ol the home; a brother. Mark Carulhers of Bay City: grandparents, Clarence and Tillic Clausner, and Wilson Carulhers, all of Wentzville. Ix-ading the Thanksgiving dedica tion of the facility will be the Rev. Dr. Francis M. Womack Jr., pastor. Other participants will include the Rev. Dr. John MacLeod, general presbytery of Coastal Carolina Presbytery; the Rev. Jerry McCann, former interim pastor: the Rev. Lewis W. Fowler, presbytery associ ate for church growth; anil others who have had a part in the life of the new congregation. During the ceremony the building committee, led by Tom Mcdeiros, will receive keys from the general contractor, Darius Lewcllyn. In turn, the keys will be presented to the ses sion of the church. A fellowship pe riod will follow. The congregation has been wor shipping in the VFW Hall at Traders Village in Calabash. Organized in 1990, the church began construction this past June. Its new facility includes a combi nation sanctuary and fellowship hall that will seat 175 people, a kitchen, two offices and a large classroom. The building is being completely furnished with equipment and fur nished donated by members ami friends of the church. The chancel furniture was designed and built by members, with funds for materials provided by a contributor to the church. A family in the church has donated a new organ and other indi viduals have donated items that will enhance worship and make fellow ship events possible. Attending Conference A group of local women will be attending the Women's Aglow Inter national Conference Nov. 20-23 in Orlando, F-la. The 10 women attending from Shalloltc arc: Tuddic Dixon, Annette Ward, Irene McCrackin, Marlenc Varnum, Elaine Pigott, Gi/clla Mut schinski, Jean Barber, Jean Lcggett, Toni Iossi and Johnnie Smith. They will hear a variety of speak ers as training for their part in world ministry. Training Rally Set A disciplcship training rally will be featured at the Brunswick Baptist Association Mission or "M" Night Monday, Nov. 25, at First Baptist Church of Oak Island. The Rev. Horace Jackson, a pas tor emeritus from Wilmington, will lead the 7 p.m. training program. Three Dedicated Three babies were given back to the Lord in a dedication service Sunday after worship service at Ce dar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. All three are grandchildren of the Rev. Freeman Cause, pastor, who performed (he ceremony. They arc Kendra Jabril and Lcndra Abril Cause, twins of Lcndrcd and Berta Cause and godsons of Evelyn John son. and Kierra Danielle Shields, daughter of Permclia and Billy Shields of South Carolina and god daughter of Louise Gausc. Many relatives and friends from Pleasant View and Pleasant Grove congregations attended the ceremony. Union Well Represented Ocean View Union was well rep resented at the 10th annua! Youth Evangelism Conference. Not only a chartered bus but many cars took lo cal young people, their supervisors, teachers, assistant principals and stale officers to Raleigh. They enjoyed music by the Johnson County Union Youth Mass Choir as well as the ministry of the Rev. Gregory Moss of Rcidsvillc, historian for the General Baptist Suite Convention. Bryant Attends Session James Hobson Bryant, a deacon at Cedar Grove, can be depended upon to help keep members current on Christian activities across the smte. Most recently he attended the an nual session of the General Baptist Stale Convention, Inc. at Corner stone Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville.
