Permission Needed Before
Converting Farm Wetlands
Farmers should get permission
from ihe Soil Conservation Scr\ice
office before convening wetlands or
risk losing their U.S. Department ol
Agriculture benefits.
The wetland "trigger" has been
changed under the 1990 Farm Bill,
which means farmers must be more

Jones, district conservationist for the
SC'S office in Bolivia.
"Put simply, don't convert any
wetlands for any purpose without
first alerting SC'S," said Jones.
The "trigger" is the action a

Bill's provisions. Under the 19X5
Farm Bill, farmers did not violate
the swampbusier provision untii
they planted a crop on wetlands
converted alter Dec. 25. 19X5.
Under the recent changes, tann

The act of clearing, filling or
draining a wetland "triggers" ineli

Jones.
II the farmer plans lo use a con

purposes, such as developing a tract
of land for housing or for a golf
