Take Precautions When Burning Escaped debris burns resulted in 44 fires that burned a total of 273 acres of woodland in Brunswick County this year, according to Ro bert Norton, assistant county ranger with the N.C. Forest Service. Many of these fires could have been prevented had safe burning techniques been applied, he said. I he fires accounted for about one-third of the 134 woods fires in the county to which the Forest Service responded this sear, above the national average. Debris fires amount to about one fourth of the more than 100,000 lor es! fires that blacken the United Stales every year. Norton advises taking several step-; before burning debris. ?Check local laws on burning de bris. In Brunswick County an open burning permit is required from 12 a.m. to 4 p.m. if burning is done more than l(X) feet away from an occupied dwelling. ?Consider alternatives. Sometimes it is more efficient to take trash to a dumpstcr or recycling center than to bum it. ?When burning debris, keep sup pression tools readily available in case the fire becomes dangerous. These include a water hose, rake and shovel. ?Clear a fire break at least 10 feet wide around the area before igniting the fire. ? Consider the weather. If it is dry or windy the danger that the fire w ill escape is greatly increased.
