SPORTING SCENE Legion Stadium Lacked Southern Hospitality ".Vest Brunswick's 12-6 football playoff win a: 'A - : iio *ill hkelv go down in history a< one of the * . . rojans. I that for se\eral reasons. The : :"fen<e played a virtually flawless game. and the defense came up with four turnovers and a fourth-quarter -land deep in their own ierntor\ that decided the game. Any v.in over Whiteville is a big one. These two schools have butted heads a total ol 17 times, with the Wolfpack usually coming out on top. Stealing one from the Wolfpack on their home turf made the victory thai much sweeter. Beating Whiteville tw ice in the same season on their field is unheard of. Not to detract from the win, but the hospitality at Legion Stadium in Whiteville left something to be desired. When you're on the road in the late rounds of the slate playoffs, you certainly have to expect some boisterous fans. I don't have any problem with the Whiteville fans in general. They cheered for their team is anyone would expect They were also pretty gra cious in defeat. But there was one gentleman in particular on (he Wolfpack side thai went way beyond the bounds of good sportsmanship. Throughout the game, this person used the stadium's public address system not to call the play-by-play, but to root for the Woifpack. At one point, he even begged for a penally against the visiting Trojans. It was a bad situation regardless of the culprit's identity. But the fact that it was the school superintendent, Dr. Jerry Paschal, makes it that much worse. To say the least. Dr. Paschal wasn't selling a very good example for the hundreds of young spectators, or the players on ihe field. He didn't endear himself to many West Brunswick fans either. Personally, I was embarrassed lor the school and the Whiteville com munity. Dr. Paschal may be a very fine superintendent, but he should slay out of ihe press box in the fulure. Chucky Goes Hollywood Leland's Chucky Brown signed with ihe Los Angeles Lakers lasi Thursday, a week after he was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brown, a 6-foot-K-incher who starred on the basketball court for the North Brunswick Scorpions and then the N.C. Stale Wolfpack, played two plus seasons w ith the NBA's Cavs. Chucky fills the Lakers' roster spot that was opened when center Viatic Divac went down w ith a herniated disk in his lower back Brown went from a strong contender in the Central Division to a lead ing team in ihe Pacific Division. He also moved closer into the spotlight in 'Tinsel Town " Maybe we'll see Chucky on Arscnio Hall's lalk show sometime. Doug Rutfer r Relaxing, Affordable.
