Shallotte Parade Begins Holiday Festivities
by dor i cos(;rovk(;ur(;anus
The 1W1 Shallotte Christmas Parade made its
way through downtown last Saturilay morning
with blaring sirens, clowns, marching bands and
plenty of beauty queens.
The weather started out chilly, but soon offered
parade-watchers a blue-skied, sunny day. It was a
perfect day for a parade, though not typical
weather lor the Christmas season.
Beginning at Shallolte Middle School on N.C.
17') and then heading north on U.S. 17 Business,
S(> parade entries entertained crowds gathered
along the route.
The front ol the parade was led by the trium
phant West Brunswick High School Trojan
Marching Bund, proudly recognizing the football
team's win over East Bladen High School only
the night before. Other schools represented by
marching bands were South Brunswick High and
North Brunswick High.
Mayor Sarah Tripp and Shallottc Aldermen
waved from their vehicle, as did Miss Brunswick
County 1991, Lisa Dale Young, who appeared in
one of her last duties as reigning queen before
Crystal Williams takes the throne for 1992.
And what parade would be complete without
those brightly colored little cars driven by Shrin
er's Club members? The Brunswick County
Shrine Temple showed off its Sudan Thunderbolts
"funny cars," probably leaving many a youngster
wishing he or she had one to drive.
Numerous churches, banks, restaurants and
community groups entered floats or sponsored
celebrities in the line-up, but the real reason most
of the children attended the event was to sec the
man of the season.
A boy who would only identify himself as
"Joey" waited patiently, asking "Where's Sania
Claus?"
Santa Claus rode at the very end of the parade,
behind the saddle clubs with their horses, atop
one of the Shalloue Fire Department's shiny red
trucks.
When he finally appeared, Santa threw loads of
candy to the kids and waved, promising he'd be
back Dec. 25 for sure.
