SOUTH GIRLS ARE 4-1
Cougars Enter Holidays Undefeated
RY DOUG RUTTER
Coach Gene Doane and his South Brunswick boys'
basketball team entered this week's UCB Tournament at
UNC-Wilmington sporting a perfect 5-0 record.
The Cougars have dominated most of their opponents,
winning their first five games by an average of 30
points.
South has manhandled 1-A schools Topsail and
Acme-Delco twice each this season,
and knocked off 4-A Hoggard 71-62
on the road.
But Doane said the defending
Waccamaw 2-A Conference champi
ons have only played "so-so" through
the first three weeks of the season.
"We've got a long way to go," he
said. "We've won, but I haven't been
happy with the way we've done it."
Doane said South Brunswick needs
to improve its defense, rebounding, free throw shooting
and get better play from the bench.
"A> lar as the wins we've done alright, but that some
times is a two-way mirror," he said. "You look good on
one side but sometimes you're not as good as you look."
South 's Preston McGriff, the 6-foot- 1 1 -inch center,
lias played well thus far despite being double- and triple
teamed inside, Doane said.
"He's played as well as you'd want the kid to play,"
he said. "He's a man playing with boys now, not a boy
playing with boys."
McGriff is averaging 20 points a game, while point
guard Josh White is scoring 17.6 points a game from the
outside.
South's first opponent in the UCB Tournament is
Athens Drive, a 4-A school from Raleigh. They play to
day (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m.
The South Brunswick girls' team
has opened the season 4-1 and is
playing this week in the North-South
Challenge at West Columbus.
South was scheduled to play 4-A
Chester (S.C.) High School in its first
game of the tournament today
(Thursday) at 4 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament arc
Spring Valley (Columbia, S.C.),
Bladenboro, Tabor City, Pumell Sweatt and host West
Columbus.
Coach Mike Iscnberg said the Lady Cougars have
played "pretty well" through the first five games.
The team has twice beaten a pair of 1-A schools,
Acme-Delco and Topsail, and lost to 4-A Hoggard.
"We need to play some teams on our level to really
see how we're doing," Iscnberg said.
" We've won , but I
haven t been happy
with the way we've
clone it."

Dillon Wins In OT
