Calabash Merchants Plan
For Another Active Year
BY DORI COStJROVK (Jl RCAM S
After a year of promoting busi
nesses and services in Brunswick
County's southernmost coum.i1
towns, the Calabash Merchants As
sociauon has another busy ycai
planned.
"It went well," said Richard John
son of new organization's first year.
"We're very pleased with our
group."
Johnson, who runs a gilt shop in
Calabash, is one of the organizers ol
the association, the type ol group he
says the town hasn't had in "seven
or eight years".
The CMA now boasts a member
ship of 40 contributing merchants,
who helped to fund the group with
Si I.1 (XX) m ivsM, he said.
With those funds. Johnson adds,
the CMA was able to complete sev
eral projects to help promote a posi
live image of Calabash.
A sign that urges travelers to
"Experience The Real Calabash"
was placed along U.S. 17 in Little
River, S.C.. by the group of mer
chants. It is visible u> motorists
heading north from Myrtle Beach.
S.C., into North Carolina.
Johnson said this was to persuade
vacationers to actually come to
Calabash for 'Calabash-style' sea
food. instead of going to restaurants
in other towns advertising such cui
sine
The CMA also spent S9(X) to
place a "Welcome To Calabash"
sign, complete with a sandblasted
and handpainted shrimp trawler on
it, along N.C. 179 near the south end
of town.
"We warn to bring a positive iden
tity back to Calabash," Johnson said
of the move to install road signs.
! Ic said he fcils that other nearby
tourism sources have taken away
M i nc ii c?i the busmess Calabavh dc
serves.
To further help local merchants
promote their business, the CMA es
tablished a town welcome center as
well, complete with brochures from
restaurants and shops, near Marsh
Harbour Marina on N.C. 179.
The possibility of forming a
chamber ot commerce was "looked
into" by the association. Johnson
said, but he added, "we're not ready
lor that. Maybe someday."
In the coming year, he said, mem
bers look forward to choosing new
officers and placing three to four
more welcome signs on oilier roads
that lead into Calabash.
Although the CMA is "somewhat
inactive" during this time of year by
Johnson's estimations, he expects
the group to begin holding meetings
again by Marvh in time for the
tourism season.
At that time, they will look into
the feasibility of organizing a town
festival to promote the crafts anil
foods that Calabash has to offer va
cationers.
"It takes time," Johnson said of
ihr? pm a's to promote the
town and organize themselves. "We
have to continue to support one an
other in order to support the town."
Johnson invites interested Cala
bash business owners to call him
during the day at 579-7075.

In the Banking Commission's

part by absorption of a portion of the

The annual report provides finan

In 1990, United Carolina Bank re

BY HOLLY RICHARDS, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
South Brunswick Islands Chamber Of Commerce
A new year brings new challenges and new goals for the chamber. We
arc moving ir.io new and exciting things this year.
We're doing some very positive things that we haven't
tried before.
We've elected our new board members and we'll
be having a board retreat at Sea Trail Plan union on Jan.

will be an all day event. This year in addition to devel
oping our program of work for 1992, we'll have a
speaker/tutor who will clearly define the roles of
chamber board members, chairman/presidents and ex
ecutive vice presidents. President Terry Barbec and I
heard this speaker. Chic Dambach, at a chairman ori
entation seminar thai wc attended in October. Wc were very impressed
with his knowledge and decided to bring him to the South Brunswick
Islands to share his knowledge with us.
Speaking of President lerry Barhee, although his presidency began on
Jan. 1, 1992, he'll officially be sworn in, along with our new board mem
bers, at our annual meeting Feb. 7. 11ns year's meeting will be held at Sea
Trail Plantation. The format will be different this time. Annual meeting
Chairman Chcrri Cheek has derived a wonderful menu, along with danc
ing after the awards program. It all sounds just wonderful to me.
I'm looking forward to working with new people and seeing new
faces. It's always a challenge to start something new. Those of you who
know me also know that I'll be starting a new diet. So maybe by this
spring there will be less of me lor you to sec. The new me? Well, we'll
