RIITTKR The South Brunswick boys' bas ketball team built a 19-point lead at halftime and cruised to a 73-58 win over visiting Hoggard last Friday night. Preston McGriff, the Cougars' 6 loot-ll-inch senior ccntcr, scored a game-high 21 points to lead South to Us eighth win in nine games this season. "We played hard anil 1 thought we dominated." South Brunswick Coach Gene Doane said of the non conference win. "Looking at their laces, they were playing like they knew they couldn't heat us." Doane said of the 4-A Hoggard Vikings. South trailed early in the contest, but used a 10-0 run to build a 14-7 lead with 3:52 to play in the opening quarter. The Cougars led 22-13 after one quarter and were still holding on to a nine-point advantage midway through the second period before breaking the game wide open. Reserve forward James Clarida scored six points to key an 11-1 run for South Brunswick, which took a 43-24 lead into die locker room at halftime. The Cougars substituted often and shuffled their iineup in the second half as Hoggard pecked away but never cut the South Brunswick lead below 15 points. Doane praised the play of Clarida, Kevin Smith and Butch Fullwood, who scorcd 10 poinLs in one of his best games lor the Cougars. Point guard Josh White added 13 points for South. Mario Shaw led the Vikings with 12 points. Adam Carlson scored nine points, and Ashley Tcaguc and Kevin Robinson both added eight. Doanc said South Brunswick faced a much tougher Hoggard team on Dec. 10 in Wilmington, when the Cougars won 7 1-62. South opens Waccamaw 2-A Conference play Friday night at East Bladen and faces the North Brunswick Scorpions next Tuesday in Lcland. McGriff and company went unde feated in the conlcrcncc iasi year en route to a 25-4 season. Sou tli has dominated many of its opponents so far this year and has won four of the five games it has played against 4- A opponents. "It's a whole new season when you get in the conference," Doanc said last week. "Some of these teams in the conference arc as gtxxl as the 4-A's we play but they'll play us better.
