GUEST SPORTS COLUMN Team Should Say Thank You BY LONNIE MITCHELL As I think about our year with the Trojan football team, I can't seem to forget the fact that someone on our team should say thank you to a lot of folks. We were successful enough to make it to the state playoff. We were not the top winners but 1 left feeling lull of pride. We were a little school down on the coast having this opportunity. 1 was able to take the defeat. My mom told me before we played, "Son, there will be eight schools in this piayofi, four wiii be defeated. S'nouiu your school be defeated, feci proud if you played your best." That statement I didn't forget. I will have to say how 1 felt when my sister who lives in Greensboro saved her paper to let me read the ar- "" CHhLL tide about us. Thomasville's coach, Mr. Allen Brown, in an article made the following statement, "It's getting around to the point where people don't think we can win the big one." The article conunues by saying Brown couched that statement in a laugh, then proceeded to break up the press corps with a siring of one liners, at one point describing west Brunswick as "u coinbinalion of Godzilla with Hitler and the Blitzkrieg Warriors. I don't think all of that was necessary. 1 am very glad Trojan Coach Scay didn't make those kinds of remarks. Playing sports can be a fun tiling if we really stop making it a live or die situation. Thanks to all our parents who make numerous of sacrifices. Being there for us, being with as when we get hurt, rubbing us down, making sure we soak all of our sore areas. Thank you fans for your being present and giving us the support we needed. Thank you Mrs. Arvella Marlowe for your time and effort used to make sure our stomachs were filled before we played the games. We shall forever love you. Now a very special thank you to all other county followers supporters of our playoff. We love you for that. I know our coaches made a lot of sacrifices, leaving wives and children at home to work with us, spending long hours. I am very happy that our coaches were not interested in playing dirty ball. Mr. Brown's team members were great at intimidating us. They started the moment we hit the field. We need special work in learning how to handle that kind of thing. Thank you teammates for making this happen. All of us could not be on l'ic field at all times, therefore, it's important that we were able to support a TV 1. uiv.ii UUIVI. v^iiwi ivuuvu, J\J u UJV u j/cu i \j a U.)
