Fisherman Found In Creek
Died From Massive Stroke
Investigators say a Lclanil man
whose body was found floating in
Sturgeon Creek near Navassa last
Thursday. Jan. 9, died from a mas
sive cerebral stroke.
Robert Millard Joiner, 62, of
Route 4, Box 58, apparently died be
fore his body fell from a boat and in
to the water, said Cecil Logan,
Brunswick County Emergency Man
agement coordinator.
Joiner was found floating on his
back, said Logan, which usually
doesn't indicate a drowning. An au
topsy j)erlonncd in Jacksonville
Friday indicated the victim died
from a stroke, he said.
"Apparently, he was in the boat
and, when the attack occurred,
reached to get the throttle," Logan
spcculatcd. "The boat hit the bank
and flipped over."
The body was found floaung
about a quarter of a mile from the
bridge on Navassa Road (S.R. 1435),
about 200 yards from where his boat
struck the bank and overturned.
According to Detective Gary Shay
of the Bninswick County Sheriff's
Department, Joiner's wife became
worried around 3:30 p.m. when her
husband was late coming home.
She asked a friend, Larry Chris
topher Maultsby of Sturgeon Drive,
Lcland, if he would help look for
Joiner on the creek. Shay staled.
Maultsby and another friend,
Robert Charles Willetts, of Route 4,
Lcland, took Maultsby 's boat into
Sturgeon Creek to search for the vic
tim. They found him around 4:45
p.m. floating face up and not breath
ing, said Shay.
The Lcland Volunteer Rescue
Squad responded and transported
Joiner to The Brunswick Hospital in
Supply, where Brunswick County
Coroner Greg White ordered an au
topsy.
Detectives said Joiner was check
ing fishing nets Thursday.
