Fisherman Found In Creek Died From Massive Stroke Investigators say a Lclanil man whose body was found floating in Sturgeon Creek near Navassa last Thursday. Jan. 9, died from a mas sive cerebral stroke. Robert Millard Joiner, 62, of Route 4, Box 58, apparently died be fore his body fell from a boat and in to the water, said Cecil Logan, Brunswick County Emergency Man agement coordinator. Joiner was found floating on his back, said Logan, which usually doesn't indicate a drowning. An au topsy j)erlonncd in Jacksonville Friday indicated the victim died from a stroke, he said. "Apparently, he was in the boat and, when the attack occurred, reached to get the throttle," Logan spcculatcd. "The boat hit the bank and flipped over." The body was found floaung about a quarter of a mile from the bridge on Navassa Road (S.R. 1435), about 200 yards from where his boat struck the bank and overturned. According to Detective Gary Shay of the Bninswick County Sheriff's Department, Joiner's wife became worried around 3:30 p.m. when her husband was late coming home. She asked a friend, Larry Chris topher Maultsby of Sturgeon Drive, Lcland, if he would help look for Joiner on the creek. Shay staled. Maultsby and another friend, Robert Charles Willetts, of Route 4, Lcland, took Maultsby 's boat into Sturgeon Creek to search for the vic tim. They found him around 4:45 p.m. floating face up and not breath ing, said Shay. The Lcland Volunteer Rescue Squad responded and transported Joiner to The Brunswick Hospital in Supply, where Brunswick County Coroner Greg White ordered an au topsy. Detectives said Joiner was check ing fishing nets Thursday. Prior to the hkwktt service, the Gos pel and Senior choirs gathered in the upper room dining hall with Carlcne Reaves, music department director, lor a few words of praise for a job well done in 1991 and a moment of silent prayer in memory of deceased members. Choir members shared personal testimonies, exchanged secret pal gifts and enjoyed a buffet dinner with Gracie Hewetl and Helen Bellamy. During the Watch Night service, pianist Richard Bernard accompa nied the choir. The Rev. Freeman Gause, pastor, gave the invocation and also a scrmonctte. At midnight participants joined in a choral read ing of praise, followed hy the bene diction and an exchange of hugs and New Year's greetings. Members Helped Many members of Cellar Grove Church attended the third pastoral anniversary celebration for Pastor James Smith and family. The Rev. Vaughn Cherry and the Pleasant Hill Choir were in charge of the ministry at the morning ser vice. After a delicious fellowship lunch the evening service was led by the Rev. John Keel and Zion Plain Church, Smith's "home" church. Attendees presented the Smiths with numerous gifts and salutations.
