CHURCH ACTIVITIES Service Marks Week Of Prayer Worshipers from across the South Brunswick Islands gather today (Friday. Jan. 24, at Shallotte Presbyterian Church for a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service. Sponsored by the South Bruns wick Intcrchurch Council, the 7 p.m. ecumenical service is open to all. The week is a call to Christians worldwide to live in greater unity with cach other, starting in the local church, and with all that God has treated; and for the unity of Christ's church to become more visible. The Rev. Francis Womack, pastor of Calabash Presbyterian Church, will preach the sermon. Participating in the service will be the Rev. Land is Lancaster. Camp United Methodist; and Deacon Lewis Stanley, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church; and the host pastor, the Rev. Bill Thomas. An offering will be taken for the South Brunswick Intcrchurch Council. Chapman Called Marvin W. Chapman, director of missions for the Brunswick Baptist Association, has accepted a call to become director of missions for Central Baptist Association. Central Association is made up of churches in Randolph, Guilford and Davidson counties. In 1990 the combined membership of its 32 churches was 16,318. In addition to serving as director of missions for the local association, Chapman had served previously as assistant director of the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell and as a church pastor. He and his wife, Rebecca, resided in Southport. Nelons In Benefit The Nelons, a popular gospel group based in Adanta, will be fea tured in a benefit concert Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Shallotte Middle School in Shallotte. Also on the program will be The New Believers, <?***? a gospel group based in White ville. The concert is va* a benefit for r\ "<j Ruth Ann Shaf- ^ fer, a cancer pa licnt and the wife of the Rev. Paul Shaffer. Their hand includes Martin Gure asko on keyboards, Scott Daughtcry on drums and Todd Nelon on bass, as well as bar itone vocals. The Nelons have rcccived numer ous awards, including five Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. The New Believers gospel group is made up of Edwin Skipper, Nancy Skipper. Vickie Griffin, Mike Knotts, Chris Harrison and Gene Glisson. Hubbard Honored Doris C. Hubbard of Shallotlc Sunday became the eighth woman to receive an honorary life membership from the Presbyterian Women of Shallotte Presbyterian Church. Spokeswoman Louise Mason said the special award is conferred upon a member for her dedicated service to the church. In the 24-year history of Shallotte Presbyterian, past recipients have in cluded Betsy Rodgers, Marie Rourk, Nell Henderson, Myra Thompson, Ruth Galloway and Jeanne Nielsen. During the presentation ceremony Sunday Mrs. Hubbard's family was in the congregation ? children Rob ert Hubbard, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Chadwick and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Hubbard; and three grand children, Anthony Bragg, Aldcn Chadwick and Spencer Hubbard. Baby Contest Set The Young People's Institute will sponsor its annual baby contest at Holy Bethel FBH Church at Thomasboro Sunday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. and the public's invited. Carrie G.Stanley of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church will be the keynote speaker. The Rev. Charles Pridgcn is pas tor of Holy Bethel. Mildred Bellamy is YPI president. Holding Revival A gospel revival will be held at Lighthouse Independent Baptist Church in Supply Monday, Jan. 27, through Friday, Jan. 3 1 . Bennett Memorial Chapel of People's Funeral Home, Shallottc, with the Rev. Raymond Smith deliv ering the eulogy. Burial was to be in Mulberry Cemetery, Shallottc. Francis Womack officiating. Burial was in Twin City Memorial Gardens. Bom Oct. 24, 1916, in Detroit, Mich., Kitson was the son of the late Walter Roland and Elizabeth Pascoe Kitson. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and had reured from the New York Port Authority as a civil engineer. Survivors include a son. Walter R. Kitson III of Richmond. Va.; three {laughters, Kathryn Peterson of Winter Park, Fla., Patricia E. Kitson of Richmond and M. Susan Hodges of East Hanover NJ.; a sister Jane Klien of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. SETH MORGAN FLEETWOOD SR. Scth Morgan Fleetwood Sr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Jan. 16 at Grand Strand General Hospital, Myrtle Beach, after an illness. A memorial service was held Jan. 19 at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks, Charlotte. Fleetwood was bom in Hertford, the son of the late Judson Joshua and Mae Morgan Flccfwood. He was a retired self-employed manu facturer's representative and mem ber of the Seedman's Association of the Southeastern States, a longtime member of the Travelers Protection Association and the United Com mercial Travelers Association. He was also a member of First Presby Iciian Cliuiui ui Myrtle Bcach. He attended Guilford College and N.C. State University. Among the survivors arc his wife. Freeman Gause and his wife Louise and daughter Monika, James "Hobson" Bryani, Joseph Butler and Mo ses Stanley were among those who provided positive leader ship for Bruns wick County par .cipanis at . the 39th annual I mid-year session of the Woman's Baptist Home & Foreign Mission Convention. Those attending the event wor shipped together, planned the work of the church during the next fiscal year and received recognition for their efforts during the past year. Special recognition went to churches that had maintained A-l Department and Lydia Circle status. To cam these, the local church must have active senior, young adult and youth departments, make quarterly reports and give offerings of SI, (XX) or more. Cited were these local churches: Cedar Grove, Big Macedonia, Plea sant Grove, Little Macedonia, Plea sant View, Mt. Zion and Friendship. Of the 690 young people present, 17 were from Cedar Grove. They were accompanied by their supervi sor, Francis Grissett. As state youth supervisor, l was accompanied that day by two grandchildren, Kevyn and Andrea, and my daughter, Rose Conine John, all of Holly Springs. In remarks, Tania Butler of Shal lotte, immediate past president of the state youth, admonished her peers to keep faithful and dedicated to the Commission of Christ. She re minded them that a "a good educa tion and a good attitude will take them to their altitude". She is the daughter of Joseph and Etherine Butler of Ml.
