Grand Jury Indicts Bookkeeper Accused Of Embezzling $147,000 BY TERRY POPE A woman accusal of embezzling more than SI 47.000 from an Ormn Isle Beach business was indictcd by a Brunswick County grand jury last week on charges that she forged checks and wire transfers to obtain the money over a six-month period last year. Catha Camp Mitchell, 35, of 4226 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilming ton. is accused of embezzling the money from Feb. 21 to Aug. 30 while she worked as a bookkeeper for Sloanc/Andcrson Builders Inc. of Ocean Isle. She is accused on seven counts of forgery and uttering forged papers and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. The money was diverted from Sloanc/Andcrson and into accounts belonging to her husband, Gary Ashton Mitchell, the indictments state. Authorities believe the money was used to buy a home. Ms. Mitchell, awaiting trial on embezzlement charges in New Hanover County, is being held in state prison on other charges. She is expected to enter a plea in Brunswick County Superior Court in re V* 111 ItlUICII. Indictments accuse her of: ?Counterfeiting a check drawn on Sloanc/Andcnson's account at Uni ted Carolina Bank for S2.241, dated Feb. 21, and made payable to At lantic Coast Accounting Service by replacing the authorized payee. ?Counterfeiting a check for SI, 197 and made payable to Catha S. Camp, dated 1-eb. 28, by changing the amount of the check from SI 97 to SI, 197. ?Counterfeiting a chcck for SI, 002 and made payable to Adantic Coast Accounting Service, dated April 4, by replacing the authorized payee. ?Counterfeiting a chcck for 55,550 and made payable to Adantic Coast Management Service Company, dat ed April 25. by replacing the autho rized payee. ?Counterfeiting a wire transfer for 575,000 made payable to Atlantic Cnasl Fnvironmrnl ftilivl lnn<- ?K by placing the unauthorized signa ture of G.A. Sloanc III on the docu ment. ?Obtaining property by false pre tenses by changing a wire transfer of S45,(XX) intended for High Point Sprinkler Co. to transfer S25,(XX> in stead to Atlantic Coast Environ mental Consulting, a company owned by the defendant's husband. ?Counterfeiting a check for S35,(XX) and made payable to Atlantic Coast Environmental Consulting, dated July 9, by placing the unauthorized signature of Thomas R. Oaks and G.A. Sloanc 111 on the check. ?Counterfeiting a check for S3.HX) and made payable to Gary Mitch ell ? Atlantic Coast Environmental Consulting, dated Aug. 30, by plac ing unauthorized signatures on the check. United Carolina Bank has filed a civil lawsuit against Ms. Mitchell in an attempt to rccoup the losses.
