Happy To Be Alive I'm happy to be alive after being pinned in my automobile for more than an hour on the afternoon of Jan. 17. I was hit by a 1989 Jeep Blazer at 4:20 p.m. en route to school where I was taking lesson plans that I'd for gotten to pass in before leaving at 3 p.m. I look the full impact on the door where I sat. Then a few minutes lat er, the glass window in the door ex ploded. With the sound of a shotgun blast, glass blew over me, filling up the lap of my skirt and my scat belt, jacket and blouse that was cut off when the paramedics arrived. I am just expressing my happiness for being alive. I thank the many friends that tried to make my devas tated car a more comfortable place to wait the long wait for the jaws of life. I will forever have a different out look on humanity because of the love and comfort afforded me by white brothers and sisters in Christ that read Scriptures for me and prayed aloud for me as if I were their own dear child pinned there, not knowing whether the gas tank would be the next thing to explode. Thanks to the officer who attend ed me by just standing if front of my windshield at first, looking like a general doing his job well. Then the smile and inspiration that enveloped his face as he heard the song 1 was singing with the side of me that didn't have a broken col iar bone ana bruised nbcage, giving a wave offering to the Lord God Jehovah. Then he waited until I was in emergency to hear my version of what took place in the accident. Then turning to my husband and saying, "Mr. Hcwctl, if this world had more people in it like your wife it would be a better place for all of us to live." Thanks to the rescue squad and its attendants that were so kind, con cerned and caring for me. And thanks to the members of the New Hanover Hospital medical staff that gave me the most courteous re spect as they took care of the many things they had to do to find all of the bodily injuries that 1 now suffer. And last but not least, thanks to the little old white man orderly that pushed my wheelchair through the lobby when I was being dismissed. He said, "I am going to pray that you have a speedy recovery bemuse I know that you must love Jesus and children a lot by the way you were praying and saying Scriptures in emergency. "I will ask him to make your's an instant, miraculous recovery and that by Monday you will not be so painful that you can give them a Dr. Martin Luther King's Day Cele bration, because that is where your heart is. "Mrs. Hewcii," lie vuiilinucu, "you are going to be proud of mc too because I am going to be in volved in a program of the same sort because I belong to the Salvation Army Congregation." Our prayers have all been an swered. Thanks, thanks, thanks, I am so thankful. Next week's column will carry the happenings of the Brunswick County School System's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday celebration.
